Preserving O’ahu Historical Tsunami Photos

May 12, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Have you seen a tsunami photo in grandma's album, or a photo hanging on a wall in her living room?
Did your father tell you where he was when the tsunami hit in 1946, 1952, 1957, 1960, and 1964?
Waves over 30 feet high hit the North Shore, Wai'anae, and East O'ahu during the April 1, 1946 Aleutian Islands tsunami!
The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management (DEM), NOAA International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC), and Hawai'i State Public Library System are partnering to preserve historic images and personal stories- they are an important, but perishiable, part of our tsunami heritage.
Residents willing to share images and stories with the O'ahu Historical Tsunami Photo Project are asked to bring them. DEM and ITIC staff will scan and catalogue images.
To view existing images or submit online, visit http://www.tsunamiphotos.org
