Dr. Yoshiko Okuyama will discuss her book “Japanese Mythology in Film.” Popular Japanese movies and anime often depict common mythological meatphors such as death and rebirth. Also hidden in the Japanese filmic text are culture-specific symbols and folktale motifs. Japanese films like Departures, Mushi-shi, and Spirited Away and many other films are pop culture's representations of sacred subtexts in Japan embedded in popular Japanese movies and anime.
