Kupu EIP Program Looking to Fill Internship Positions on Maui and Hawaii Island

Kupu’s EIP Program currently has 2 half-time (900 hour) internship openings. One (1) Position at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge with The US Fish and Wildlife Service on the island of Hawaii; and one (1) position at the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife on the island of Maui. About The Extended Internship Program
The Extended Internship Program is designed for individuals who are looking for an intensive entry-level experience in preparation for a career in the conservation field. In the Extended Internship Program, individuals work at a single worksite/agency that best matches the individual’s interests.

Benefits:
– Receive a $1,300 monthly living allowance (subject to taxes) and a $2,822.50* Education Award (similar to a scholarship) towards higher education
– Opportunity for interest earned on certain educational loans (during the internship term) to be paid for by AmeriCorps
– Complete over 900* hours of environmental community service
– Health care and childcare benefits (if eligible)
– Receive an in-depth entry-level environmental education/experience from an environmental agency that interests you
– Develop a strong relationship and work side-by-side with a single site manager for the duration of you internship

Program Dates:
Interns will start no later than March 23rd, 2015 and end by October 17th, 2015 or when they reach 900 hours (between 5-7 months*).

* These internships are half-time positions (900 total hours of service), in contrast to the typical full-time positions that are offered in the EIP Program (1700 hours of service). Due to the shorter term, the AmeriCorps Educational Award and Program Dates have been reduced.

Applicant Requirements:
– Must be at least 18 years of age (or 17 with a high school diploma) by March 2015
– Must possess/be working towards high school diploma or equivalent
– Must have own housing and transportation
– Must pass a background check
– Must meet the necessary physical and behavioral requirements

Guidelines for Recommendation Letters:
– Letters should be written by professional sources such as coaches, bosses, teachers, groups you’ve volunteered with, church leaders, or anyone who has known you for at least a three months. Letters should not be written by immediate family members or close friends.
– Letters of recommendation should address:
1) The context in which the person writing the recommendation knows you
2) Your personality, positive attributes, and work ethic
3) Why you make a good candidate for this position
– Letters should include the reference’s contact information, and should be no more than two pages in length
