The Atherton Studio 2016 Season Opens with The Magic Flute

Hawaii Opera Theatre’s educational touring adaptation of Mozart’s The Magic Fluteopens HPR’s 2016 Atherton Summer Season on Saturday, May 14. Performed by a small cast from HOT’s Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio, the special youth-friendly matinee begins at 3:00 p.m. The hour-long show, originally created for grades K – 8, offers opportunities for adventurous audience members of all ages to play a four-headed dragon and even sing a chorus.
Tickets for this interactive Atherton Studio event for family audiences are specially priced at $10 for adults and free for youth under 18 years old.
Online reservations at http://www.hprtickets.org include a service charge. Seats may also be reserved by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.
This adaptation of The Magic Flute begins when the Queen of the Night entices the young Prince Tamino to go in search of her daughter, Pamina, who is being held by the priest Sarastro. In reward, she promises Tamino the girl’s hand in marriage. Tamino accomplishes his end, unwillingly accompanied by the Queen’s bird catcher, Papageno. Tamino becomes the disciple of Sarastro, whose goodness and wisdom he has learned to admire. In the end, the prince and the princess are united. The cast is comprised of Leslie Goldman McInerny (The Queen of the Night, Pamina, and Papagena), Sarah Lambert Connelly (Papageno), and Andrew Lee (Prince Tamino and Sarastro).
