Surfjack Talk Story Sessions: Hawaiian Filmmakers, Unscripted

December 1, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

What does an authentic Hawaiian narrative look like on the big screen?

HAWAII Magazine hosts a lively talk story with the next generation of Native Hawaiian filmmakers shooting short- and feature-length films in the Islands – as published in the December issue of the magazine.

Selected by the Sundance Institute to workshop their screenplays, these writer-directors will speak candidly about their experience with Hollywood’s champion of indie filmmaking, their diverse perspectives on storytelling through a native lens and explore the state of contemporary cinema in Hawaiʻi.

FILMMAKERS:
Bryson Kainoa Chun, writer-director, “Ka Piko”
Hale Mawae, writer-director, “The Moʻowahine”
Kari Noe, writer-director, “Kai and Honua”

Watch clips from their current features and mingle with Hawaiʻi's local film community.

Free and open to the public. Moderated by Taylour Chang, director of Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
