Composting the Bokashi Way

More than 30 years ago, Japanese microbiologist and organic farmer Teruo Higa discovered Bokashi, an alternative to traditional methods of composting. Bokashi composting is an eco-friendly way to increase soil quality and promote plant growth. It utilizes natural microorganisms and an anaerobic process. It does not require insects and does not produce strong odors. When mixed correctly it has a malt vinegar scent.

Jan Nadamoto will discuss how bokashi works and the various ways its mix and byproducts can be used. She will then lead participants in making their own bokashi mix to take home. Each participant will get to make one quart-sized Ziploc bag of bokashi mix (approximately one pound). The mix will be ready to use two weeks later.

Registration is required. Registrants may sign up at the library reference desk or call 377-2456 during library hours. Space and materials are limited to 30 participants. The workshop is recommended for ages 12 and up.
