Statewide sustainability goals that were established in 2014 by the Aloha+ Challenge can now be kept track of online.
The Aloha+ Challenge dashboard was launched Monday by Governor David Ige, mayors of all four counties, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the University of Hawai’i, and Hawai’i Green Growth.
Progress of the state’s achievement progress can be viewed on the dashboard, which includes clean energy and solid waste reduction, two of the six targeted areas. The remaining four Aloha+ Challenge targets should be completed by 2017.“As state senator, I co-introduced the resolution to endorse the Aloha+ Challenge during the 2014 legislative session. As governor, I am committed to state leadership on sustainability in every department. As a new initiative, we are spearheading a statewide Sustainable Transportation Committee to form partnerships and fund projects in support of clean energy and sustainable communities,” Gov. Ige said in regards to the launch. “I will continue to work closely with the mayors, OHA, state legislature, UH, and other partners to make progress on the Aloha+ Challenge in the next four years. My administration prioritizes government transparency and accountability. The Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard will provide key data to the public and decision makers on how the state and counties are measuring up as we work towards 2030.”
Featured on the dashboard are data trends for each of the targets: clean energy, local food, natural resource management, waste reduction, smart sustainable communities, and green workforce and education. The date on the dashboard is inclusive of information such as Hawai’i’s annual spending on fossil fuels, the state’s total greenhouse gas emissions, and the amount of material recycled statewide. When the information is able to be broken down by county, that information is also provided.
