SUMMARY:The Great Māhele
DESCRIPTION:The event known as Ka Māhele covers a ten-year period in the reign of Kamehameha III\, when the King attempted to divide all the land in the islands among himself and 252 of the high-born Ali’i\, the chiefs of old. Kamehameha was a forward-thinking ruler who sought to bring his kingdom into the modern\, 19th-century world. Join us as we examine the Hawaiian system of land tenure before Ka Māhele\, explore the reasons behind this major paradigm shift in Hawaiian culture\, and take a look at whether or not the monumental effort was successful. \nThis program is presented by the Friends of the Libraries\, Kona (F.O.L.K.). For more information\, please contact Kailua-Kona Public Library at 327-4327. Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 15 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or other special accommodations.

SUMMARY:Plant Aloha (FREE Class) Home Food Forest Design w/ Wade Bauer
DESCRIPTION:Hawaiian Sanctuary is proud to present: Plant Aloha\, a FREE educational series of sustainable farming classes. Every Thursday morning\, from 9:00am until 12:30pm\, with special Saturday monthly offerings\, led by local and visiting experts. Visit our website for more information:\nhttp://hawaiiansanctuary.com/plantaloha \nThursday\, September 14th 2017 – 9:00am-12:30pm\nHome Orchard & Food Forest Design with Wade Bauer\nBringing all we have learned together to design a diverse\, productive and low maintenance home orchard. From selecting fruit trees\, shrubs\, and ground-covers\, to their placement\, installation and maintenance. \nThis class is part of the Plant Aloha Permaculture Series facilitated by Wade Bauer\, the Primary Permaculture Lecturer and Permaculture Intern Supervisor at Hawaiian Sanctuary. Wade has taught Permaculture for over 13 years\, with 10 years in Hawaii. He has a B.S. in Environmental Biology and is the founder of Malama Aina Permaculture: Edible Landscape Design\, Education\, and Nursery. Wade's farm in Kapoho is focused on being a demonstration site modeling a locally appropriate sustainable homestead. \nContact:\nWade Bauer 248-245-9483\nWadeBauer@gmail.com\nMalama Aina Permaculture: Edible Landscape Design\, Education & Nursery\nhttp://hawaii-permaculture-institute.weebly.com/ \nThe goal is to teach local residents how to efficiently grow their own food at home to provide a fresh organic balanced diet. From field or backyard to table all the crops necessary are covered including their propagation\, cultivation\, harvest\, preservation\, and use. Permaculture tools and techniques focus on easy and practical ways to create food abundance at home. Every class is a blend of practical theory and hands on projects. Occasionally\, free plant starts will be available. \nLocally\, this series will help increase food security and resiliency to natural disaster in Hawaii by relocalizing and diversifying our food supply. Globally\, this series also helps reduce transportation of food\, which will decrease carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. Culturally\, these classes cover polynesian and pacific island crops and farming methods\, which help preserve traditional Hawaiian horticultural practices. Plants from around the world that are already in use in Hawaii\, will be highlighted\, showcasing the multicultural heritage that makes present day Hawaii and our grinds unique and ono-licious. \nEach class starts promptly with a lecture and Q&A before hands-on farm learning ~ Come prepared with notepad and writing utensil\, closed toed shoes\, sun hat\, and gloves. \nPlant Aloha is supported\, in part\, by the County of Hawaii\, Research & Development. We are still looking for support to complete and enhance this amazing project. Please give what you can:\nhttp://hawaiiansanctuary.com/donate \nLocation:\nHawaiian Sanctuary – Laka Lounge\n13-3194 Pahoa Kalapana Rd (Highway 130). A talented athlete\, Mike was named Rhode Island’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior in high school and received a full scholarship to pitch at Duke University. As a true freshman\, he went on to be a first team All American selection\, and still currently holds the lowest single season ERA in Duke Baseball history. But after the promising start\, he ran into health issues\, suffering a severe arm injury that required surgery ..and during that time\, a new passion was born. He used his downtime to write songs and record them in his dorm room\, and although it started simply as a hobby\, he released a song called College Humor in 2011 that went viral\, and ended up jumpstarting a career in a whole new field… music. \n6p Safehouse Doors for 21+\n7p Hall Doors All Ages with an Adult\n8p Show starts

SUMMARY:13th Annual Lahaina Town Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Event Hosts: Down the Hatch\, Lahaina Town Action Committee\, Volcom\, Mālama Maui Nui \n13th Annual Lahaina Town Clean Up\nSaturday\, September 16th\, 2017 8 am – 1 pm \nLast year more than 500 Volunteers participated in the Lahaina Town Clean Up from Puamana to Mala Wharf and everywhere in-between. Will you join us this year? \nFor the 2017 event\, the Lahaina Town Clean Up is going to be the same day as the International Coastal Cleanup – Saturday\, September 16th\, 2017. Nearly 12 million people and counting have been part of this worldwide volunteer effort to protect the ocean. Today\, plastic has been found in 62% of all sea birds and in 100% of sea turtle species. A problem as big as plastic in the ocean requires a big response! By participating in the International Coastal Cleanup\, you can make a difference\, right here in your own community. \nLahaina Town Clean Up founder Matt Lane has challenged this year's organizers to address prevention as a focus of the cleanup. To work toward accomplishing this goal\, we are partnering with the County of Maui to place an emphasis on prevention as a means to combat the issue of waste showing up in our oceans through our drains by stenciling awareness messages of “No Dumping – Drains to Ocean” at storm drain inlets in Lahaina. \nEVENT DETAILS:\nEvent is FREE and open to the public. Cleanup supplies will be provided but volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own gloves\, water bottles\, litter grabbers\, small nets for cigarette butts\, and trucks to haul rubbish and recyclables. \nThis is a waste free event please bring a reusable water bottle and reef safe sun protection. There will be a bin at Kamehameha Iki Park to collect rubbish – no green waste please. \nDownload the Clean Swell App to keep track of the debris you help remove during the cleanup. After the cleanup\, this data will be added to the International Coastal Cleanup’s marine debris database. Results from the data help inform policy and debris removal efforts. \nThe 13th Annual Lahaina Town Clean Up event is supported by Mālama Maui Nui\, in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Clean Up. \nVolunteers will meet at Kamehameha Iki Park before combing the coastline from Puamana to Mala Wharf. Stencil teams will pick up supplies and instructions before heading out. \nThe day will begin at 8 am with coffee and breakfast snacks provided by Ruth Chris Steak House during check in and as data cards are distributed to participants. \nThe cleanup will be held from 9 am to noon\, followed by lunch for all volunteers provided by Pacific'O and water provided by Tropic Water. \nMAHALO TO THESE EVENT SPONSORS AND VOLUNTEER TEAMS:\nDown the Hatch\, Volcom\, Lahaina Town\, Mālama Maui Nuii\, Ace Hardware\, Lahaina Yacht Club\, County of Maui\, Surfrider Foundation\, Rotary Club Of Lahaina Sunset\, Trilogy Excursions\, West Maui Parasail\, Island Star Excursions\, Makai Excursions\, Extended Horizons Scuba\, UFO Parasailing\, Goofy Foot Surf School\, Beach Bums BBQ & Island Grill – Napili\, Peter Lik Fine Art Photography\, and MORE! \nCoffee and Pastries sponsored by Ruth's Chris Steak House Hawaii 8am-9am\nWater sponsored by Tropic Water – Maui (Don’t forget your reusable water bottle!) 8am-1pm\nVolunteer luncheon sponsored pacific'O 12pm-1pm \nEVENT SPONSORS AND VOLUNTEER TEAMS NEEDED!
