SUMMARY:Hot Club of San Francisco - Cinema Vivant
DESCRIPTION:The Hot Club of San Francisco presents Cinema Vivant\, an evening of vintage silent films accompanied by live gypsy swing. It is a celebration of imagination and innovation. \nImagine yourself in the idyllic French countryside in the 1930's. Sometime before dark\, a gypsy caravan sets up camp in a field outside of town\, luring the locals out for an evening’s fun. The wanderers travel with a film projector\, pointing it at the side of a barn. As the images flicker to life beneath the stars\, gypsy musicians play their guitars and fiddles\, matching every movement on the screen with characteristic virtuosity\, passion\, and humor.

SUMMARY:Why is it Dark at Night? Talk by Dr. Tom Geballe of Gemini
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: $10\, $8 for members \nThe obvious answer to the question “why is it dark at night?” is that the sun is shining on the other side of the Earth\, and the light of the distant stars is much weaker than the sun. But how is this possible when there are so many stars that have been shining for so long? And how dark is the sky? Is it dark only to eyes like ours that are sensitive to visible light\, or is it also dark to infrared\, ultraviolet\, x-ray and radio ‘eyes’? Join us as Dr. Tom Geballe of Gemini Observatory answers these questions\, as well as delving into historical and scientific attempts to understand this simple yet important observation. \nGet full details here: bit.ly/2kIXly7

SUMMARY:Book Club - River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our discussion of this month’s book selection. \nThe River of Doubt—it is a black\, uncharted tributary of the Amazon that snakes through one of the most treacherous jungles in the world. Indians armed with poison-tipped arrows haunt its shadows; piranhas glide through its waters; boulder-strewn rapids turn the river into a roiling cauldron. \nAfter his humiliating election defeat in 1912\, Roosevelt set his sights on the most punishing physical challenge he could find\, the first descent of an unmapped\, rapids-choked tributary of the Amazon. Together with his son Kermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer\, Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon\, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process\, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever. \nAlong the way\, Roosevelt and his men faced an unbelievable series of hardships\, losing their canoes and supplies to punishing whitewater rapids\, and enduring starvation\, Indian attack\, disease\, drowning\, and a murder within their own ranks. Three men died\, and Roosevelt was brought to the brink of suicide. The River of Doubt brings alive these extraordinary events in a powerful nonfiction narrative thriller that happens to feature one of the most famous Americans who ever lived. \nCopies are available at the branch. \nProgram schedule is subject to change. Contact the library (10 days for Oahu; 15 days for neighbor islands) in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.

SUMMARY:Beginning Charleston
DESCRIPTION:The Charleston is a dance named for the harbor city of Charleston\, South Carolina. The rhythm was popularized in mainstream dance music in the United States by a 1923 tune called “The Charleston” by composer/pianist James P. Johnson which originated in the Broadway show Runnin' Wild and became one of the most popular hits of the decade. Runnin' Wild ran from 29 October 1923 through 28 June 1924. The peak year for the Charleston as a dance by the public was mid-1926 to 1927.
