SUMMARY:Beginning Charleston
DESCRIPTION:The Charleston is a dance named for the harbor city of Charleston\, South Carolina. The rhythm was popularized in mainstream dance music in the United States by a 1923 tune called “The Charleston” by composer/pianist James P. Johnson which originated in the Broadway show Runnin' Wild and became one of the most popular hits of the decade. Runnin' Wild ran from 29 October 1923 through 28 June 1924. The peak year for the Charleston as a dance by the public was mid-1926 to 1927.

SUMMARY:Basic Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Travis Dodson\, creator of the library’s Seed Share Station\, will share his knowledge of basic seed saving practices. Seed saving is an ancient tradition which allows us to maintain control over our own local food supply\, without the need to continually purchase new seed from companies far away. \nWhether you’re new to seed saving and gardening\, or are a seasoned “green thumb” expert\, come and meet other gardeners and share your own ideas\, experiences\, and seed you may have saved yourself. The event will include a community exchange of seeds and plant cuttings (due to fire ant risk\, no soil\, please!). \nTravis is also looking for new volunteers to help maintain the library’s Seed Share Station. The more who get involved\, the better the station will be for everybody! \nCall the North Kohala Public Library at 889-6655 for more information. Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 15 days in advance if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is required.

SUMMARY:Book Club - A Man Called Ove
DESCRIPTION:Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles\, strict routines\, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? \nBehind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox\, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats\, unexpected friendship\, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. \nCopies are available at the branch. \nProgram schedule is subject to change. Contact the library (10 days for Oahu; 15 days for neighbor islands) in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
