SUMMARY:Jivamukti Yoga Series
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays Jan 12th to Feb 9th\n10:30-11:45am 5 weeks series\n$15 for drop in or 5 series for $60 \nAn internationally-recognized form of hatha yoga\, Jivamukti Yoga is founded on five tenets—ahimsa (non-violence)\, bhakti(devotion)\, nada (music)\, shastra(scripture) and dhyana (meditation). The method emphasizes enlightenment or Self-realization as the goal of the practice\, hence the name Jivamukti\, which is a derivation of the Sanskrit word jivanmuktih\, meaning “liberation while living.” It centers on the importance of establishing an elevated—i.e.\, selfless—intention as the motivation for one's practice. Jivamukti is an integrated method\, incorporating elements of raja yoga (ethical\, physical\, breathing and meditative practices)\, bhakti yoga (devotional practices)\, karma yoga (practices of selfless service) and jñana yoga (intellectual and meditative practices). In the state of enlightenment\, one realizes the oneness or interconnectedness of all being; hence\, Jivamukti emphasizes the importance of veganism\, environmentalism and political activism as key practices toward the goal. Jivamukti Yoga teachers are trained in a demanding program that covers these practices\, as well as the traditional subjects such as asana practice and yoga philosophy. Jivamukti Yoga classes are rigorous\, and the goal of the practice—enlightenment—is remembered throughout by the teacher and student alike.

SUMMARY:Maunakea Skies Talk: Cracking the Code of Existence
DESCRIPTION:Real progress is being made in the remarkable yet notoriously difficult task of cracking the code of existence itself through advanced mathematics\, physics and astronomy. New knowledge streaming from Maunakea’s summit is an essential part of this epic quest. \nDr. Doug Simons\, Executive Director of Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope will delve into “precision cosmology\,” a term he describes would have earned a chuckle from fellow astronomers when used not long ago. Cosmology studies the structure\, evolution and origin of the entire Universe\, and requires observations of objects near the edge of the visible Universe—making it increasingly difficult to make real progress. For centuries cosmology measurements have been notoriously incorrect\, but times have changed. Measurements made over the past decade\, including those using instruments on Maunakea\, give real merit to the term “precision cosmology.” \nInterwoven with the marvels of precision cosmology\, Dr. Simons will also share perspectives about the conflict over Maunakea and the challenges between science and culture. This misperception is easily challenged by probing far deeper than terms like ‘sacred’ or ‘science’ allow. These polarizing comfort zones melt away when confronted by fundamental truths spawned not by people\, but nature.

SUMMARY:Kamilo Point community cleanup event
DESCRIPTION:Mahalo for your interest in getting involved! \nThis is a collaborative cleanup event with the board of the Surfrider Foundation Hilo Chapter. Cleanup event will run from ~ 8:45AM – 3:45PM and 4WD vehicles are required to access the remote cleanup site. \nWe have space for some volunteers but please RSVP early to ensure a spot. YOU MUST send us an email to us at kahakai.cleanups@gmail.com to hold a spot in one of our rides\, or call / text 808-769-7629 for more info (no RSVPs here please!) \nTo date\, HWF and 4\,000+ volunteers have removed over 211 metric tons (465\,000 lbs!!!) of marine debris from the shores of Hawai'i nei (Hawai'i Island\, Maui\, Midway and the French Frigate Shoals) since 1996. Of those\, 202 metric tons alone were removed from HAWAI'I ISLAND since 2003. We couldn't have accomplished all this with out all our beloved volunteers! \nCan't make this event? No worries\, join our mailing list (http://eepurl.com/b0Axvj) and do your part every day by opting out of S.U.P. (single-use plastics) … and spread the word! \nPlastic pollution is threatening our native wildlife and we each can do something about it by reducing our dependence on single-use plastics\, refusing products with excess plastic packaging\, putting pressure on our representatives to support legislation to reduce single-use plastics like shopping bags\, foam to-go ware containers\, plastic water bottles\, etc\, and help on a daily basis by picking up litter around you (check out the Litterati app!). \nThis cleanup is partially funded by an award from the NOAA Marine Debris Program. If you'd like to make a donation to support such removal and prevention activities\, please check out our website at http://www.wildhawaii.org/ \n#himarinedebris #loveyourbeach #marinedebris #teamupcleanup
