SUMMARY:Free Lecture: "What a Fish Knows" - Jonathan Balcombe\, PhD. MAUI
DESCRIPTION:The Vegetarian Society of Hawaii's Monthly Lecture Series is FREE and open to the public. Speakers come from a wide range of backgrounds to talk about topics like diet\, environmentalism\, sustianability and much more. To learn more\, please visit the VSH website here at vsh.org \nThis month\, the VSH presents “What a Fish Knows” by Jonathan Balcombe\, PhD. \nIn this dynamic\, richly illustrated presentation\, ethologist Jonathan Balcombe takes us under the sea\, through streams and estuaries\, and to the other side of the aquarium glass to reveal the surprising capabilities of fishes. Although they exceed thirty thousand species ? more than all mammals\, birds\, reptiles\, and amphibians combined ? fishes are rarely considered by us to be individuals with thoughts\, feelings\, and experiences. Combining science with stories and the author’s own personal experiences\, What A Fish Knows upends our common biases toward fishes as primitive and dull\, showing them instead to be sentient\, aware\, social\, and even Machiavellian. \nJonathan Balcombe is the director of animal sentience at the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy and the author of a number of books\, including Second Nature\, Pleasurable Kingdom\, and the newly released New York Times bestseller What A Fish Knows. Balcombe has three biology degrees\, including a PhD in ethology from the University of Tennessee\, where he studied communication in bats. A popular commentator\, he has appeared on Fresh Air with Terry Gross\, the BBC\, and the National Geographic Channel\, and in several documentaries\, and has contributed features and opinions to The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, Nature\, and other publications. He lives in Florida. Find him on Facebook\, follow him on Twitter at @Jonathanpb1959\, and visit his website at jonathan-balcombe.com \nThis lecture will also be held on Maui on Thursday\, June 15th \nFor more information\, please visit the VSH website at vsh.org

SUMMARY:Electric Palms Hawaii presents Tritonal
DESCRIPTION:Electric Palms Presents presents Tritonal performing live in Honolulu at The Republik on Friday\, June 16th\, 2017. Tickets are on sale Thursday\, May 25th at 10:00am at all locations listed below. This is an 18 and up event. \nTritonal capped off an outstanding 2015 with the January 2016 release of “Blackout” – the long coveted but previously unavailable single featuring Steph Jones’ delicate vocals and a pop twist on the duo’s melodic sound. “Blackout” quickly became Tritonal’s fastest-selling and -streaming single to date\, the latest in a long line of hits for Austin\, Texas songwriters and producers Chad Cisneros and Dave Reed. \nFormed in 2008\, Tritonal spent their early days on premium imprints like Anjunabeats\, before eventually landing at Will Holland’s Enhanced Music\, which Cisneros and Reed came to co-own. Key moments on Enhanced include: “We Belong”\, a pivotal 2009 Ferry Corsten rework; the hit-laden 2011 debut album\, Piercing the Quiet; and the acclaimed 2013-2014 Metamorphic EP trilogy featuring euphoric favorites “Follow Me Home” and “Now or Never”. “Now or Never” cracked the Top Five on Billboard’s Airplay Dance chart\, a placement recaptured by follow-ups\, “Anchor”\,“Colors”\, and “Untouchable”. In a first for the duo\, “Now Or Never” also became a sports anthem for CBS’s Thursday Night NFL broadcasts in 2015\, introducing the duo to millions of new fans weekly. Tritonal is not slowing down in 2017 with the largest live shows and releases to date. \nLocal openers will be announced soon. \nTickets available to the General Public on Thursday\, May 25th at 10:00am: BampProject.com / JointheRepublik.com / SeeTickets.us / Local Motion Stores / Navy/Hickam ITT Offices / Army LTS Offices / UH Campus Center / The Republik Box Office Tuesday through Friday 10:00am until 6:00pm with a $2.00 service fee per ticket.
