SUMMARY:August Maunakea Skies Talk
DESCRIPTION:UH Hilo Astronomy majors will receive more hands-on telescope time than ever before\, thanks to a recent agreement between the Institute for Astronomy at UH Manoa and the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy at UH Hilo. These fortunate students have a unique opportunity afforded to few other programs in the country\, namely the opportunity to study the universe in the world’s largest observatories for optical\, infrared and submillimeter astronomy\, located on the 13\,000-foot high summit of Maunakea. Join us to for an update on these and other developments in UH Hilo’s Astronomy Program\, at ‘Imiloa’s Maunakea Skies talk on August 19 at 7:00 p.m. presented by Dr. Marianne Takamiya\, Associate Professor of Astronomy and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UH Hilo. \n“I will present the latest results of the research of faculty and students in astronomy\, how our academic program has developed in the last five years and what we envision for the future\,” stated Takamiya. “UH Hilo has unique elements that can make ours a novel astronomy program that produces not only astronomers\, but also skilled professionals who are able to work in complex systems.” \nTakamiya\, who is an expert in physical properties of material between stars in distant galaxies\, has presented throughout the United States\, Chile\, Japan\, South Africa and Europe on research she has accomplished using the Maunakea telescopes while heavily involving undergraduate students. Takamiya is a graduate of Universidad de Chile and the University of Chicago\, where she received her doctoral degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics. She was one of the first Gemini Science Fellows at Gemini North during its commissioning phase and held a postdoctoral position at UH Hilo before joining its faculty. She currently serves as the chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Hilo campus. \n‘Imiloa’s monthly Maunakea Skies program includes observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawai‘i\, hosted by Planetarium Technician Emily Peavy. The audience can view prominent constellations and stars visible during this time of year. Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Friday of each month. General admission tickets are $10\, $8 for members (member level discounts apply). Pre-purchase tickets at ‘Imiloa’s front desk or by phone at 808-932-8901. \nMember Level Discounts: $8 for Kupuna\, Individual\, Dual\, Kupuna and Family Members; $6 for Patron Members; Free for Silver\, Gold\, and Corporate Members.

SUMMARY:BAMP Project presents Animal Collective
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning there were two of them – Avey Tare and Panda Bear – banging drums and tweaking synths in their bedrooms\, singing strange and sometimes heartbreaking songs about imaginary friends and childhood pets. Carried along by washes of squalling feedback\, the music was noisy\, and it was weird\, but it was\, at heart\, pop music. This was the start of Animal Collective. For fifteen years Dave Porter (Tare)\, Noah Lennox (Bear)\, Brian “Geologist” Weitz and Josh “Deakin” Dibb have been rewriting the musical map\, their line-up and aesthetic shifting with each astonishing release as they continue their pursuit of a new psychedelia. Their wild path has taken them from cramped concrete basement shows and forest floor singalongs to immersive installations at the Guggenheim and performances to millions on national television. \nA local opening act will be announced soon. \nDetails on the Show:\nWhere: The Republik\, 1349 Kapiolani Blvd 3rd Floor\, Honolulu\, HI 96814\nWhen: Monday\, August 22nd\, 2016\nLounge Doors: 6:00 pm (21 and up)\nHall Doors: 7:00 pm (All ages accompanied by an adult)\nShow: 8:00 pm (All ages accompanied by an adult)\nPrices: $32.00 in advance plus applicable fees\, increase day of the show plus applicable fees \nTickets available Friday\, March 25th at 9:00am:\nBampProject.com / JointheRepublik.com / Flavorus.com / Local Motion Stores / Navy/Hickam ITT Offices / Army LTS Offices / UH Campus Center / The Safehouse (the Lounge within The Republik) Tuesday through Saturday 6:00pm until 1:00am with a $2.00 service fee per ticket / The Republik Box Office Tuesday through Friday 10:00am until 6:00pm with a $2.00 service fee per ticket (The Republik Box Office will open at 9:00am for the on sale date only)

SUMMARY:BAMP Project presents Thompson Square
DESCRIPTION:The duo of Keifer and Shawna Thompson are a force to be reckoned with in the modern day Country music landscape. International Country music stars\, Thompson Square has topped the radio charts across the Unites States\, Canada and Australia with #1 hits “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not\,” “If I Didn’t Have You” and “Everything I Shouldn’t Be Thinking About\,” respectively. \nAfter taking its headlining “Just Feels Good Tour” across the U.S.\, Asia and Australia in 2014\, Thompson Square took time off to collaborate in the studio with both Dann Huff and celebrated producer Mickey Jack Cones (Dustin Lynch/ Joe Nichols) to work on the Stoney Creek Records duo’s upcoming third album. \nThe result is a barefaced\, emotionally charged and gutsy sound from the married duo that was honored as both the ACM and CMA “Vocal Duo of the Year” in 2012.
