SUMMARY:Rhiannon's Circle Singing: 3 Saturday Classes in June
DESCRIPTION:3 Saturdays in June: 6\, 13\, & 20\n10am-Noon $45 for all three classes\nBelow is a description of what to expect; a refresher of what Rhiannon offers in her classes.  We have had such an amazing ride together! Let's continue the exploration of our vocal potential.  You do not have to have previous experience with Rhiannon to join this session. \nThis bold experiment in music making is a participatory ritual\, allowing a sharing of culture through the medium of music\, the voice in all its forms and colors. Singers gather in a circle with a conductor in the center. Four improvised patterned parts are given to the Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass sections. These patterns are changed and shifted by the conductor so that the singing continues for long stretches\, creating a rich\, deep and joyful experience. This form calls forth a wonderfully primal connectedness among the singers\, strengthening relationships and developing leadership. Singers are invited to solo over this hearty vocal orchestra which requires both courage and musical focus. Working this way stretches both individual and ensemble capability\, a synergistic approach to music making. Because we sing in an invented language in this form\, it is accessible across borders and cultures\, making it possible to create this musical magic anywhere on the planet. Improvisation is a beautiful musical force and a wonderful life- changing tool because it teaches us to stay awake and be present in every moment to our options\, gifts and challenges. \nRhiannon will deepen your improvisational vocabulary and strengthen your musical practice using Circle Singing\, polyrhythms\, harmony\, physical movement\, solo work\, small ensemble exercises and group collaboration from her book Vocal River: The Skill and Spirit of Improvisation. Rhiannon will guide you in the vibrant creation of improvised music in a circle of other committed singers so that our work can go deep and strong\, teaching us to stay awake and present in every moment.\nBeautiful musical and life lessons learned.\nAnother opportunity to work with Rhiannon in the intimate company of other creative singers at the Shala!! DESCRIPTION:Super Hero Bon Dance Kicks off Oahu Summer Reading Programs \nA “Super Hero Bon Dance” 2015 Summer Reading Kick-off Event will be presented on the Great Lawn of the Hawaii State Library on Saturday\, June 6 from  10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Entertainer Lina Girl will emcee this free special event.   \nEveryone is invited to wear a kimono\, happi coat or favorite super hero costume and join costumed super heroes like Batman\, Wonder Woman and Star Wars’ Storm Troopers at the Bon Dance from 10 a.m. to noon with live music performed by the Aiea Taiheiji Yagura Gumi.  In addition\, real-life law enforcement and safety heroes will participate in the event to illustrate some of the various kinds of heroes that will be explored throughout our Summer Reading Programs.  The bon dance event will provide a venue to celebrate our ancestors\, who are heroes as well.     \nFrom noon until 2 p.m.\, participants can see an Okinawan Taiko Drum Performance by Chinagu Eisa Hawaii\, enjoy a Children’s Japanese Dance Troupe Performance by Hanayagi Mitsusumi Dance Group\, and experience Magic by the Amazing Alan Arita. \nThere will be special appearances throughout the event by Star Wars characters of the Pacific Outpost of the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion Hawaii Outpost\, Hawaii Hero Alliance’s line up of superheroes\, Lani Moo\, Calci and Kawika from Meadow Gold Dairies and Ronald McDonald in the afternoon.  Keiki can participate in children’s activities such as Make Your Own “Hachimaki” Headband and Fold a Samurai Hat\, and enjoy interactive and informational booths by event sponsors. DESCRIPTION:A Deeper Look At Our Bodies with Shannon Schafer\nJune 6th-7th\n$45 per class\, or $70 for both \nSaturday June 6th 12-3pm\nPart 1: Introduction to the Spine and Pelvis: Learn to “stand up” to bad posture and counteract negative movement patterns all on your own.\nWe will begin by talking about basic anatomy of the skeletal frame emphasizing the spine and pelvis. We will break down and discuss the curvatures and movements of the spine and establish why it matters to take a look at them during our Yoga practice\, working our way through a practice focused on asanas which most commonly present misalignments in these areas.\nWe will take an in depth look at our posture\, assessing how our postural habits work into our most fundamental asanas (poses).  Our work will be to establish individually where we tend to misalign\, as well as what we should personally focus on in working against those negative patterns to establish new and healthier ones.  \nSunday June 7th 12-3pm\nPart 2: Myo-fascial and Tension Release: Rid yourself of your aches and pains as we deepen our understanding of the body's internal fabric\, and look into the movements we take over and over again.\nWe will discuss the fascial system (the body’s internal fabric/ connective tissue)\, the concept of Biotensegrity and come to an understanding of how this so deeply impacts our asana practice and can rob us of maximum benefit when not addressed. We will weave in the knowledge of alignment we gained from the Postural Workshop and integrate the ideas of these two systems of the body.\nOur physical work will be head-to-toe\, self myofascial release and massage\, learning simple self-assessment tools to take home with you to transform your body and posture\, as well as manage physical discomfort.
