SUMMARY:Author Talk with Chris Cook
DESCRIPTION:Chris is the author of THE PROVIDENTIAL LIFE & HERITAGE OF HENRY OBOOKIAH\, a new non-fiction expansion of the 200-year-old story of the Ka'ū-born young man who changed Hawai'i forever. Obookiah/ʻŌpūkahaʻia's life and death in New England led to the sending of American Protestant missionaries to Hawai'i. \nChris will talk about ʻŌpūkahaʻia's childhood years in Ninole\, and his apprenticeship as a kahuna at Hikiau Heiau along the shore of Kealakekua Bay. The author will also discuss the role of the Lee family of Hilo in the 1993 return to Hawai'i of ʻŌpūkahaʻia's remains. \nProgram schedule is subject to change. Please contact the hosting library for more information regarding this program\, or to arrange special accommodations\, such as a sign language interpreter: 933-8890.

SUMMARY:Healing With Aloha
DESCRIPTION:Can the Aloha Spirit heal our bodies\, our relationships\, and our world? Diagnosed with stage 2 Colorectal cancer\, Makala Kozo Hattori refused conventional treatments of chemo\, radiation\, and surgery in favor of healing with Aloha practices handed down from his kûpuna (elders). He has found that Aloha can not only heal the body\, but also bring peace to relationships and the world. This workshop combines Hawaiian practices like ho'oponopono\, oli\, and “talk story”; Eastern practices like Yoga Nidra and meditation: with Western research in compassion cultivation and vagus nerve activation to bring healing into all aspects of our lives. \nIn the Aloha Spirit\, this workshop is given *freely with an opportunity to pay-it-forward. \nRefreshments and snacks will be available. \n*$10 facility fee donation for the Hawaiian Sanctuary is encouraged.

SUMMARY:Teen Summer Reading Finale
DESCRIPTION:As a way of encouraging teens to read 20 minutes a day\, those who participated in the 2016 Summer Reading Program were entered into a lucky drawing. A total of 24 Oahu teens were selected in the drawing to vie for a chance to win the Grand Prize of a Chromebook computer and other awesome “tech gadget” prizes. At the event\, each teen will choose a “numbered” pizza box with a special prize inside. Hawaii Pizza Hut is the corporate sponsor\, and has supported the HSPLS Teen Summer Reading Program for the past 24 years. \n Entertainer Lina Girl\, a devoted library patron\, returns by popular demand to emcee this year’s event. State Librarian Stacey Aldrich will offer opening remarks. \nCanvas Disciples and Recess Pieces\, hip-hop dance crews from the Playground Dance Studio\, will perform during intermission. The Canvas Disciples\, founded just three years ago\, have placed in all four internationally-recognized competitions they have entered\, including winning First Place at the 2016 Aloha Dance Convention. \n“We know that reading over the summer is a great way for students to keep their brains in shape for the next school year; it increases vocabulary and comprehension skills\,” said State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich. “We are excited to be able to celebrate the reading achievements of teens this summer\, and grateful to Hawaii Pizza Hut for supporting the great incentives for reading.”
