DESCRIPTION:As a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings\, Jivamukti Yoga is grounded in the original meaning of the Sanskrit word asana as “seat\, connection” – relationship to the Earth. Earth implies all of life. \nJivamukti Yoga maintains that one’s relationship to others (asana) should be mutually beneficial and come from a consistent (sthira) place of joy and happiness (sukham). This is a radical idea that\, when put into practice\, can dismantle our present culture\, which is based on the notion that the Earth and all other animals exist for our benefit and to be exploited \nfor our own selfish purposes. \nSo the practice of asana becomes more than mere physical exercise to keep one’s body fit or to increase strength or flexibility; it becomes a way to improve one’s relationship to all others and thus lead to enlightenment – the dissolution of the sense of separateness\, the realization of the oneness of being\, the discovery of lasting happiness. \nThis workshop will explore the core philosophy of Jivamukti Yoga which is comprised of 5 Tenets: \nAhimsa=Nonviolence\nBhakti=Devotion\nDhyana=Meditation\nNada=Sound\nShastra=Scripture\nThis workshop is open to all levels. \nBanka Jennifer Schneider came to yoga through Buddhism. She was first exposed to meditation and chanting while living at Tassajara Zen Monastery and Green Dragon Temple.She went on pilgrimage to India to study with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and to France to study with Thich Nhat Hanh. In 2003 Banka completed her first teacher training at Kalani with Kathy Elder.In 2007\, she became certified in both Sivananda and Jivamukti Yoga and became an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher in 2015.Banka has spent 5 weeks since 2008\, studying\, living with and taking care of her teachers in New York and has currently been teaching yoga for over a decade.

SUMMARY:Mr. Kiko Searches for Aloha
DESCRIPTION:Pāhala Public and School Library will be hosting a free Summer Reading Program on Tuesday\, June 14\, 2016\, at 12:00 pm.  Former Pahala resident Marion Kittelson-Villanueva\, will be our guest reading her recently published book “Mr. Kiko Searches for Aloha”\, written under the pen name Marion Louise. \nThis beautiful children’s picture book for ages four to eight\, illustrated by Susan Shorter\, tells of cultural implications and highlights the values of individual differences.  The coqui\, a singing tree frog of Puerto Rican fame\, finds himself as a misfit in Hawaii.  Not by choice\, Kiko faces the other species in the rainforest and comes to know true rejection.  Will there ever be any aloha for this new arrival? \nMarion a retired secondary school teacher and elementary school librarian\, was born in Hawai'i of Puerto Rican and Portuguese decent. This is her first creative writing experience. \nA copy of Marion’s book has been donated to both the Pāhala Public & School Library and Nā'ālehu Public Library\, and is available for borrowing with a Hawaii State Public Library card.   \nAfter the program\, there will be a simple craft for children. Volunteer assistance is especially helpful during the summer months when gardens need a little extra TLC. We will be making some improvements to the terrace area\, including adding and leveling soil\, and doing some general maintenance and beautification projects.  \nJoin us for some good company and rewarding work. If you don’t have a library card: bring a valid photo ID and proof of your current mailing address with you to fill-out an application form at the library.
