The band’s self-titled debut and sophomore effort De Stijl amassed critical acclaim and built a passionate underground following\, but it was the release of 2001’s White Blood Cells that thrust the White Stripes onto magazine covers as they captivated larger audiences through worldwide touring. “Fell in Love With a Girl” served as the band’s breakthrough hit and its accompanying Michel Gondry Lego clip was chosen by Pitchfork Media as the #1 music video of the 2000s. \nThe release of Elephant in 2003 not only cemented the band’s reputation\, but also offered the hit “Seven Nation Army” which has since been appropriated as arguably the most popular chant in sports stadiums around the world. \nIn 2004\, White teamed up with Loretta Lynn to produce and perform on her Van Lear Rose album\, an effort that won GRAMMY Awards for Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration With Vocals for the single “Portland\, Oregon.” To date White has won nine GRAMMYs in seven different categories. \nWhite formed a “new band of old friends\,” the Raconteurs\, in 2006. Their debut album Broken Boy Soldiers featured the #1 hit single “Steady\, As She Goes” and showed a markedly different side of White\, one where songwriting\, vocal and guitar duties were shared. In 2009\, White returned to his original instrument\, the drums\, and started the Dead Weather with members of the Kills\, Queens of the Stone Age and the Greenhornes. Releasing two albums in two years and unleashing a dark\, captivating live show upon curious audiences\, the Dead Weather further cemented Jack White’s musical versatility and range. \nAlso in 2009\, White opened the doors to his very own Nashville-based record label\, Third Man Records\, where he has since produced and released more than 250 records in just over five years. DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month – celebrate both by joining us for an evening of inspiration & entertainment as we seek to end violence against women through creative expression & financial support for the YWCA of Hawai'i Island Sexual Assault Support Services. \nA Poetry Slam is a fun and competitive poetry event where poets are awarded prizes based on audience support for their performance. For the Slam Against Violence\, we will be mixing it up a bit\, so please read below for the basic rules: \nBring a poem (or a story or song\, but no instruments please) that helps make the world safer for women. Perhaps it honors an important woman in your life\, exposes the tragedy of sexual assault\, or celebrates the wisdom & contributions of women in our local or global community. It can be your own work\, or that of another poet or artist. You’ll have 3 minutes to perform the poem on stage (memorization is great\, but not required). \nIn exchange for a donation of any amount\, audience members will have the opportunity to honor the performers by giving lei to the poets of their choice. The poets with the most lei at the end of the night will win prizes. So\, bring poetry to share and cash to support YWCA of Hawai'i Island Sexual Assault Support Services. And be prepared to have a great time with your Hawai’i Island ‘ohana in a creative\, supportive and inspiring atmosphere!

Williams had recently switched from baseball to bass guitar when\, walking to choir practice one night\, he heard strains of roots-reggae coming through a door. The fellow reggae enthusiast turned out to be Rachmany\, a devotee of roots-reggae and dancehall\, and especially the music of Don Carlos and Black Uluru. \nThe nucleus of a new and innovative “California Reggae” band got rock-solid when Marley heard percussionist and drummer Wesley Finley’s impressive solos on a big African drum in a World Music class. At the same time\, the bassist had befriended a local band featuring keyboardist Rory Carey\, who soon became another cornerstone of the budding Rebelution. \n“Too blessed to be stressed\,” is one of many key song lyrics from Rebelution’s new album Count Me In. This is their fourth full-length release on its own label 87 Music\, and partnering for the first time with Easy Star Records\, makes its tenth year together.
