Orvis Opera Studio will perform in this free concert featuring opera arias and other classical music favorites led by Maestro Timothy Shaindlin.  The event is the culmination of two weeks of coaching with Maestro Shaindlin. \nMaestro Timothy Shaindlin has been on the faculty of the Yale School of Music since 2008 and has served on the music staffs of the Metropolitan Opera\, New York City Opera\, Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Washington National Opera\, San Diego Opera\, and multiple world-renowned companies.  Mr. Shaindlin has played in classes and coachings for some of world’s most loved voices including such artists as Joan Sutherland\, Birgit Nilsson\, Luciano Pavarotti\, Frederica von Stade\, and many more. \nIn addition to his work as a Coach and Teacher\, Mr. Shaindlin has had engagements on the podium with the Wolf Trap Opera Festival and Chicago Opera Theatre.  He most recently conducted HOT’s production of The Mikado\, which performed in last June for audiences in Honolulu and on Maui.  \nFounded in 1998 by HOT’s Artistic Director\, Henry Akina\, the Mae Z. SUMMARY:Slack Key Guitarist Danny Carvalho
DESCRIPTION:Danny Carvalho\, one of Hawaii’s youngest slack key guitar virtuosos and a 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee\, will present a free performance in celebration of Kaimuki Public Library’s 50th Anniversary. \nIn addition to his slack key artistry\, Carvalho is known for his soulful singing of both traditional and contemporary favorites.  This young and rising star has achieved many musical milestones including: the first slack key player to be featured on the nationally-syndicated program “From The Top” in 2004\, two appearances on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” in 2006 and 2011\, Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee in 2009 for his CD “Somewhere” in the “Slack Key Album of the Year” category\, and his music was featured in Alexander Payne’s Academy Award-winning film “The Descendants.”  \nThe Friends of the Library of Hawaii is sponsoring this 45-minute performance which is suitable for ages 5 and older.  Young children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. \nCall the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

Born and raised in Honolulu\, “Aunty Nyla” traces her roots back to the town of Kahakuloa on Maui where she learned stories from her grandparents & great-grandparents. Nyla has been a professional storyteller\, artistic director\, puppeteer and actress for over 20 years in Hawaii. She has produced shows\, performed in\, and directed concerts for numerous organizations. She is also a retired librarian with the Hawaii State Public Library System. She is known as a strong advocate of storytelling\, local literature and the arts! This 45-minute program is suitable for all ages. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

DESCRIPTION:Keiki ages 5 and older\, accompanied by a parent or caregiver\, are invited to experience a special “Hardware Science” program featuring demonstrations\, two interactive stations for exploring Hardware Science experiments such as making secret messages using lemons\, and a super hero craft activity station to make-and-take a hero craft item. In this one-hour program\, participants will receive a stamp card to record the completion of all three activities and receive a Super Hero Academy Graduation Certificate and a chance to enter a free prize drawing. \nIn this year’s Children’s Summer Reading Program theme “Every Hero Has a Story\,” pre-kindergarteners through 6th graders are invited to discover the “superheroes” within themselves as they read and learn about real life\, fantasy and everyday heroes among us who do extraordinary things! Weekly reading incentives will include items such as school supplies\, tasty treats\, and a Super Hero Activity Kit for young readers to assemble Super Library-Ann\, Captain Read-A-Lot and a superhero of their own creation. Free lucky drawings will also be conducted at each library for a chance to win a Back-to-School Backpack filled with handy school supplies for registered children (two prize winners per library).
