DESCRIPTION:Earthday Weekend Community Info Event at the Honokaa People's Theatre\, Sunday 4/23 6:30pm Free\, Climate and Big Island Films\, Talk Story By Lanakila and Val Poindexter on local issues\, Music and Signmaking… \nEarthday is important to us people of Hawaii as we connect with these abundant and awe inspiring islands with the powerful and beautiful traditions of Hawaiian and other earth based cultures from around the world.  It's a busy weekend across the Big Island with various tree plantings\, workdays\, and sign wavings across the island. The ones we've heard about so far include the Protect Pohakuloa contingent Thursday 4/20 9am-12pm (and again Sunday 4/23 and 4/ 30 2-4pm)\, the March for Science happening Friday 4/21 at 5:30 pm in Hilo\, and again Saturday 4/22 alongside the Aloha Aina contingent of the Merrie Monarch Parade 8:30am in Hilo.  We're sure there's many more happenings\, so get out there\, but the Honokaa People's Theatre is having a community informational film screening and signmaking event in the evening on Sunday 4/23 right after our Ecstatic Dance\, to get everyone prepped for the upcoming People's Climate March 4/29 and informed about local issues from Climate Change effects worldwide to specifics on the Big Island to info about Pohakuloa and the Ookala Dairy\, including a talk story by Lanakila Managuil and Val Poindexter.  The films will be followed by signmaking (bring your materials) and live music by Kaahele and The Jeffrey James Show. Please come connect with the community\, brush up your graphics\, and get activated!  Sea Dandelion will be there serving Kombucha and Ono Tropical Fruit Poi Bowls…

SUMMARY:EARTH DAY Work & Learn Day at Kamali'i Elementary School
DESCRIPTION:Make an Impact on Earth Day!\nJoin us in the Kamali’i Elementary School Garden. We can get a lot accomplished for the end of the year and set the garden on a solid footing for next year. This is a great way for parents and community members to get acquainted with the garden program and have a hand in making it better for all of our children. \nWe have a variety of projects including:\n1) Assemble 3-bin compost system\nThis will greatly speed up the composting process and allow 5th graders to actively manage the compost system throughout the year\, with many lessons to learn. \n2) Assemble 15 wooden benches\nWe will assemble and finish 15 small benches to replace the broken picnic tables that currently provide only seating in the garden. Similar benches were built last year for Kihei Elementary and have worked great. Easy to build and an important addition to garden program. \n3) Clean and Organize Storage Shed\nThe shed is in critical need of clearing and organizing. The shed needs to be emptied\, cleaned\, new shelving units assembled and materials organized on shelves. Tool bins will be installed to keep tools safe and organized.  \n4) Improve Nursery Irrigation System\nVolunteers: 2\nInstall misters on irrigation line supported above nursery table to improve watering of nursery starts. \n5) Weeding & straw mulching planting beds\nPull weeds from planting beds and mulch with straw to control weeds. \n6) Mulching paths\nLay down cardboard and cover it with wood chip mulch in paths and open areas to control weeds and grass.  \nWe will take a break during the day for a Learning session about rat lungworm disease\, how to protect yourself\, and how it's being address for the school garden program. Volunteers will also learn about composting while building the new compost system and can take a look at our very successful vermicomposting worm towers. \nGrow Some Good will provide snacks\, water\, gloves and all tools and materials.\nKamali'i Elementary School PTA Kamalii Elementary School Kihei Maui

Ed will briefly discuss the conventional Langstroth Hive\, and the Flow Hive\, for comparison purposes. \nEd is a Certified Master Gardener with 30+ years in the landscaping industry.
