SUMMARY:Perspective and Contrast Workshop With Ava Fedorov
DESCRIPTION:When: Jan. 14\, 2018 \nTime: 10:00 am- 1:00 pm \nWhere: Molokai Arts Center \nThe basic principles of perspective are a cornerstone of representational art and must be understood if one is to make convincing drawings and paintings. Contrast describes the relationship between light and dark values and a skillful use of contrast can help you establish the illusion of distance and define the quality of light in your drawings and paintings. \nAbout Ava:\n“As an avid explorer of the world\, I use art to shine a light on the issues that most concern me—namely\, environmental devastation and extinction—both as a global phenomenon and as a hyper local one (regardless of location). My work often has a darker edge\, but the subject is a very serious one and I do not shy away from exposing the solemnity of these matters. Though traditionally a 2D artist (drawing\, painting\, printmaking)\, I am currently creating 360 degree exhibition experiences\, incorporating sculpture\, photography\, and interactive art\, to achieve the deepest impact possible. \nIn addition to being an exhibiting artist\, I am a professor of visual arts at Hawaii Pacific University and an ongoing artist in residence at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Through the Museum's groundbreaking residency program\, I work within underfunded elementary schools\, designing art projects that incorporate core science curriculum. I also have the honor of being invited to be an artist in residence at the Moloka'i Arts Center and to join the Arctic Circle 2018 Expedition\, an art and science residency aboard a 150 year-old wooden ship that sails around the North Pole during the summer solstice. \nIn terms of the “bigger picture\,” I would like to use art to create a visual and meaningful connection between extremely different and unique environments\, on a planet that really isn't so big. Though Hawaii faces these issues with immediate urgency\, all living things on Earth face threats in the form of plastic pollution\, extinction\, rising and acidifying oceans\, and extreme weather systems. \nMy ultimate goal is to be able to bring this awareness and this unifying message across the globe. One of honesty\, of hope\, and of galvanizing inspiration.”

SUMMARY:Diplo - Presented by Electric Palms Hawaii
DESCRIPTION:Diplo – Presented by Electric Palms \nThomas Wesley Pentz\, better known as Diplo\, is one of the most dynamic forces in music today. He is as much an international brand as he is a musician/DJ/producer. He's proven himself to be a ubiquitous cultural figure\, consistently bridging high and low\, mainstream and underground\, with remarkable tact and reverence. \nIn 2004\, after throwing influential parties in South Philadelphia\, Pentz cemented himself as a full-fledged artist through his debut album\, “Florida” which received praise from the underground community. Diplo worked with M.I.A. on her mixtape\, first and second albums\, eventually creating the Grammy-nominated track “Paper Planes” in 2007\, which hit No. 4 on the U.S. Hot 100 Chart and has sold more than 3 million copies. \nIn 2005\, Diplo founded label/culture lab Mad Decent to serve as a platform for showcasing the myriad of fascinating sounds Pentz encounters while touring the world. Notable artists include Dillon Francis\, DJ Snake\, Baauer\, and Riff Raff. Coming full circle from his days of Hollertronix\, Diplo has utilized the label to produce the annual and infamous Mad Decent Block Parties — a series of outdoor dance parties/concerts that now span 19 cities across North America. \nAfter multiple Grammy nominations\, including Producer of the Year\, and being crowned the #1 most streamed artist on Soundcloud for 2013\, Beyoncé's “Run the World” sampled Major Lazer's “Pon De Floor” and sold over a million copies\, cementing Diplo's place in the pop world. \nFast forward to present day\, Pentz has 235+ show dates under his belt in 2015 alone\, and three 2016 Grammy Nominations including Producer of the Year\, Best Dance Recording\, and Best Dance/Electronic Album. Diplo remains the go-to producer for the who's who of the pop music landscape. \n“Lean On” the global smash hit from Major Lazer's June 2015 release Peace Is the Mission has garnered a host of accolades including reaching #1 at Top 40 Radio\, a first for any independent label\, being named Spotify's Global Song of the Summer as well as earning the crown title of most streamed track of all time\, currently with 573 million plays\, making it the most successful independent song of all time.
