SUMMARY:Saturday Afternoon at the Movies: Come September

Talbot owns an Italian villa\, where he traditionally stays only one month out of the year (September)\, but when Talbot shows up in July\, Talbot's major overseer Maurice (Walter Slezak) is shocked out of his skin to see him — it seems that Maurice has turned Talbot's villa into a hotel for the remaining eleven months of the year. But it's July in Italy\, love is in the air\, Talbot is distracted by the beautiful Lisa (Gina Lollobrigida) and soon he is trying to prevent her from marrying another man. Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin (in his first screen role) play young guests of the villa. This 111-minute movie will be shown in the Library's First Floor Reading Room. \nFor more information\, call the Library's Art\, Music & Recreation Section at 586-3520.

SUMMARY:Greenroom Festival '16
DESCRIPTION:GREENROOM FESTIVAL 2016 ANNOUNCES\nThe Green\nBig Mountain\nDef Tech\nSPECIAL OTHERS\nand more! \nThe Green will headline Hawaii’s 2nd annual Greenroom Festival along with a musical lineup including iconic reggae band Big Mountain\, and Japan performers Def Tech and SPECIAL OTHERS on Saturday\, September 10th at Waikiki Shell! \nEnjoy the music\, stroll the Beach Market for goods and foods\, join a yoga group\, and help save Hawaii’s beaches from 3pm to 10pm. An eco-friendly environment at the show encourages sustainable practices such as recyclable and reusable products\, and features artists and artisans who strive to preserve our environment for future generations. \nTHE GREEN\nThe Green formed on O‘ahu\, Hawai‘i\, in 2009. The group began as a vehicle for six different members of Hawai‘i’s tight-knit music scene to record a few songs and have a bit of fun along the way. Their self-titled debut album\, released in 2010\, earned both critical and commercial acclaim\, and was awarded iTunes Best Reggae Album of the Year. \nTheir sophomore LP Ways & Means solidified their status as a force in reggae music. With their latest release\, Hawai‘i ’13\, the band aims higher. The album is a collection of 13 stellar tracks by a group with an insatiable urge to push their music onto the global stage. Some songs punch and some songs sway\, but ultimately they all blend to form a new shade of Green. \nBIG MOUNTAIN\nThe band first reached the charts with the song “Touch My Light” from their debut album Wake Up in spring 1993\, and went on to receive major airplay on mainstream radio stations. Big Mountain’s cover of “Baby\, I Love Your Way” was included on the soundtrack for the film “Reality Bites”\, and became a worldwide hit. This past May\, the band released their first album in 14 years\, Perfect Summer. \nDEF TECH\nWinners of multiple J-WAVE TOKIO and MTV JAPAN awards\, Def Tech serves up bi-lingual Jawaiian and reggae rhythms to form distinctive\, feel-good music that bridges cultures between Japan and Hawaii. Shen\, a former Hawaii resident born in China\, and his partner Japan-born Micro\, have honed their sound with serious study of local music and musicians\, and share an appreciation of Hawaii’s unique ecosystem and lifestyle which influence their lyrics and permeate their performances. \nSPECIAL OTHERS\nSPECIAL OTHERS is a Japanese band that blends improvised jazz with post-rock influences. Known for sweeping instrumentals and lyrics that mix English and Japanese languages\, their music is eclectic and engaging across several genres.\nThe members of the band met in high school and formed the group in 1995. They began performing in earnest in 2000\, and their first major release\, Indy-Ann\, remained in the CRJ-Tokyo charts for seven weeks. This will be SPECIAL OTHERS’ first appearance in Hawaii.

DESCRIPTION:North Kohala Public Library in Kapa'au is presenting a series of “talk story” sessions on Hawai’i’s History with North Kohala historian\, Boyd D. Bond\, in September and October 2016. \nIn the second presentation on Monday\, September 12\, Bond will describe “George Vancouver and his four voyages to Hawai'i ”. From the mid-1960s to the late ’70s\, Mendes established his legendary status by taking numerous albums and singles to the top of the charts. But it was Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66 which sparked global stardom. Performing “The Look of Love” at the 1968 Oscars\, their version went top 10\, quickly followed by the hits “The Fool on the Hill” and “Scarborough Fair.” Enjoying immense popularity\, Mendes added soul and funk to his jazz and pop\, but always with a Brazilian rhythm. His earlier single\, “Mas Que Nada\,” marked the first time that a song sung entirely in Portuguese hit Billboard’s Pop chart in the U.S. Mendes’ signature mix of bossa nova/samba and his distinctive pop instrumentation features melodies with distinct sophistication and alluring sexiness that ultimately came to define Brazilian music for many music enthusiasts around the world. \nIn the ’80s\, he scored with the No. 1 Adult Contemporary and pop top-10 hit “Never Gonna Let You Go.” And in 1992 Mendes was awarded his first Grammy® in the category of Best World Music for his album Brasileiro. Since then\, Mendes has gone on to be honored with two Latin Grammy® awards for Best Brazilian Record\, Timeless (2006) and Bom Tempo (2010)\, which was also nominated for a 2010 Grammy® award. \nMendes’ innovation and versatility has enabled him to collaborate with a wide a range of\nartists. In 2006\, his Timeless CD was a collaboration with contemporary pop\, rock\, urban and hip-hop artists\, including Justin Timberlake\, John Legend\, and Black Eyed Peas—with a re-recording of his early gem “Mas Que Nada” alongside Gracinha Leporace\, Mendes’ wife. 2008’s Encanto featured neo-soulster Ledisi and Spanish-language favorite Juanes. \nIn 2011\, Mendes released his 39th album\, Celebration: A Musical Journey\, which represented his 50 years as a recording artist and included classics from his career as well as new recordings with Ivete Sangalo and Siedah Garrett\, among them a remake of “The Fool on the Hill.” He also performed the classic at the 2011 MusiCares Gala Honoring Sir Paul McCartney. \nMendes’ iconic album: HERB ALPERT PRESENTS SERGIO MENDES & BRASIL ’66 was also inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame\, joining Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The U.S.A.\, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech\, the Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main St.\, and others in the 2012 class of historically significant recordings. \n2014 sees the release of his latest album MAGIC\, a collection of new songs\, recorded with a host of friends and special guests including John Legend\, Will.I.Am\, Carlinhos Brown and more. Magic also features the 2014 World Cup hit single One Nation. \nHall Doors: 6:30pm (All ages accompanied by an adult)\nShow: 7:30pm (All ages accompanied by an adult)\nPrices: $79.50 in advance plus applicable fees\, increase day of the show plus applicable fees\n$69.50 in advance plus applicable fees\, increase day of the show plus applicable fees\n$59.50 in advance plus applicable fees\, increase day of the show plus applicable fees\n$49.50 in advance plus applicable fees\, increase day of the show plus applicable fees \nIf you are not familiar with Sergio Mendes\, please visit http://www.sergiomendesmusic.com
