SUMMARY:Workshop in Traditional Japanese Puppetry
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with a master Japanese artist\, Koryu Nishikawa V\, who is the 5th generation Master Puppeteer of the Kuruma Ningyō style. This 160 year-old form of puppetry is related to the three person style of Bunraku. However\, in Kuruma Ningyō\, a puppet is operated by a single puppeteer who sits on a small wheeled cart. The puppeteer uses his hands and feet to manipulate the puppet’s arms\, legs and head\, all while rolling about the stage on the cart. Joining Master Nishikawa is Tom Lee\, originally from Mililani\, who has appeared in War Horse on Broadway and in Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera. This workshop also presents the principles behind traditional sannin zukkai (three person puppetry)\, the foundation of the Bunraku tradition. His work to create fermentation programs for farmers in Hawaii\, Dominican Republic\, Papua New Gunea\, Solomon Islands\, Vanuatu\, Samoa\, and Fiji has also helped propel multiple single-origin chocolates from Hawaii onto the international stage. These include the Hawi Criollo\, Likao Kula and the most recent Cacao of Excellence World Finalist\, Nine Fine Mynah Estates. \nLocation:\nHawaiian Sanctuary – Laka Lounge\n13-3194 Pahoa Kalapana Rd (Highway 130). SUMMARY:Traditional Japanese Puppetry Demo
DESCRIPTION:Experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with a master Japanese artist at eight public libraries statewide! Join Koryu Nishikawa V\, a 5th generation Master Puppeteer of the Kuruma Ningyō style\, for a free Workshop in Traditional Japanese Puppetry. \nKuruma Ningyō is the 160-year-old form of puppetry related to the three-person style of Bunraku. The puppeteer uses his hands and feet to manipulate the puppet’s arms\, legs and head\, all while rolling about the stage on the cart. \nAssisting Master Nishikawa will be Tom Lee\, Director\, Designer\, Puppet Artist\, and former Mililani resident\, who has appeared in War Horse on Broadway and in Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera. Participants can get up close to see the beautiful traditional Japanese puppets and watch how they are brought to life through skillful puppetry technique. \nThe UH-Manoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program is sponsoring this workshop along with the Hawaii State Public Libraries System.
