SUMMARY:Bernice Akamine Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Kahilu Exhibits presents a solo exhibit by nationally recognized artist\, Bernice Akamine\, featuring her two installations: “Hinaluaʻikoʻa” & “Kalo.” \nThe opening reception takes place this Thursday\, August 3 from 5pm – 7pm and is free to the public. Enjoy an artist's walkthrough lead by Ms. Akamine and take in her marvelous works. There will also be light pupu and a no host bar. \nMs. Akamine is a sculptor and installation artist based on Hawai‘i island\, who uses a variety of media to express her ideas. Recurring themes in her work include environmental and cultural issues\, as well as sovereignty\, and the overthrow of the Hawaiian government. As a Hawaiian and an artist\, Akamine feels it is her kuleana to use her voice to open doors for dialogue. \nHer new work “Hinaluaʻikoʻa” presents an immersive environment of both suspended and free standing beaded sculptures. Traditional Hawaiian fish traps initially inspired the work\, but it was also influenced by the political discord she heard on talk radio while working in her studio. Akamine noticed that the beading on the artwork was becoming tighter and tighter as the news seemed to escalate. \nAlso\, for the first time in on view in Kamuela\, is Akamine’s large scale traveling installation\, “Kalo\,” consisting of eighty-seven individual kalo plants 18″ to 24″ in height\, made from stone (pōhaku) and newsprint. The installation was created with the support of the national nonprofit\, the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation\, and has traveled to Kauaʻi\, Oʻahu\, and Hawaiʻi Island. \nMs. Akamine's installations will be on display through September 8 in the Kahilu Galleries.

SUMMARY:BAMP Project and Ineffable Music Present Hippie Sabotage
DESCRIPTION:BAMP Project presents Hippie Sabotage performing live at The Republik\, Friday\, August 4th\, 2017. Tickets will go on sale to the General Public on Friday\, June 16th at 10:00 am at the locations listed below. This is an all ages accompanied by an adult event. \nTickets available to the General Public Friday\, June 16th at 10:00 am at:\nBampProject.com / JointheRepublik.com / SeeTickets.us / Local Motion Stores / Navy/Hickam ITT Offices / Army LTS Offices / UH Campus Center / The Republik Box Office Tuesday through Friday 10:00am until 6:00pm with a $2.00 service fee per ticket. \nSacramento-born and raised brother duo Hippie Sabotage started to make music in the mid-2000s. Working closely with local producer Chase Moore during their early career\, they mixed the cultural melting pot vibes of their hometown with hip-hop and produced beats for rappers such as J. Leake and Yukmouth. They later collaborated with Chicago-based artists such as Calez of 2008ighties and Kami de Chukwu. Hippie Sabotage developed and expanded their beats and soon incorporated more diverse influences on their tracks for a whole new host of rappers such as Alex Wiley (“Something to Say”) and C Plus (“Callin' Me”). They released their own material with the EP Vacants in early 2013 and followed this with a couple more singles (“White Tiger” and “Sunny”) throughout the same year. It was only in spring 2014 when singer Ellie Goulding posted their remix for “Stay High” by Swedish singer Tove Lo (songwriter for the likes of Icona Pop and Girls Aloud) on Instagram that they began to get worldwide attention. The song reached over a million hits following Goulding's endorsement and signaled a bright future for the duo.

SUMMARY:Teen SRP 25th Anniversary!
DESCRIPTION:We're celebrating our 25th Anniversary of inspiring teens to read during the summer with an O'ahu Teen Summer Reading Finale at the Windward Mall Center Stage.\n	Since 1992\, the HSPLS Teen Summer Reading Program has had more than 80\,000 participants from grades 6 to 12\, and they have read more than half-a-million books! As a way of encouraging teens to read and “Build a Better World\,” those who participated in the 2017 Summer Reading Program were entered into a lucky drawing. A total of 24 Oahu teens were selected in the drawing to vie for a chance to win the Grand Prize of a Chromebook computer and other exciting “tech gadget” prizes.\n	Hawaii Pizza Hut is the corporate Teen SRP sponsor\, and has supported the Teen Summer Reading Program for the past 25 years providing fabulous prizes for the Finale event as well as teen prize drawings at the 26 Neighbor Island public libraries. At this event\, each teen will participate in a game featuring pizza boxes with a special prize inside.\n	The Friends of the Library of Hawaii sponsors the entertainment portion of the Finale and is the major sponsor of the annual HSPLS Summer Reading Program for keiki\, teens\, adults\, and kupuna.\n	Radio Personality Lina Girl of Krater 96.3 FM\, a devoted library patron\, returns to emcee this year’s event. State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich will be there to congratulate the winners and participate in the program.\n	Teen award-winning vocalist and ukulele performer Karlie Goya\, aka Karlie G\, will perform during intermission. Fifteen-year-old Karlie has won numerous ukulele/vocal competitions including the prestigious Ukulele International Contest\, Duke’s Ukes\, and the 2015 Brown Bags to Stardom.\n “We are very excited to celebrate the reading achievements of teens this summer\, and extremely grateful to Hawaii Pizza Hut for their continuing support and providing great incentives for reading\,” said State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich.

SUMMARY:America
DESCRIPTION:THE MACC PRESENTS the iconic band: AMERICA \nMaui Arts & Cultural Center announces the return of the iconic band AMERICA to the Castle Theater stage\, on Sunday\, August 6\, 2017 at 7:30 pm. AMERICA will also perform in Honolulu at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on August 5 at 7:30 pm. \nThe Grammy‐winning rock group\, AMERICA\, has been led for more than four decades by original founders\, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell. The power and poignancy of their musical imagery catapulted the group to the top of the charts in the 70s. Of AMERICA's albums\, six have been certified gold and/or platinum\, and their top tunes\, which include “I Need You\,” “Ventura Highway\,” “Don't Cross the River\,” “Tin Man\,” “Lonely People\,” and “Sister Golden Hair\,” were\ncornerstones of 1970s Top 40 and FM rock radio. \nBeyond their impressive catalog of hits\, listeners discover more to America’s music than surface perceptions. The combination of Beckley's melodic pop rock and Bunnell's use of folk‐jazz elements\, Latin‐leaning rhythms\, and impressionistic lyric imagery contributed to material that encompassed an ambitious artistic swath. From effects‐laden\nrockers to soul‐bearing ballads\, AMERICA incorporates a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles ‐ as wide open as the great American plains. \nTickets: Prices for either concert venue are $39\, $49\, $69\, $129\, plus applicable fees. \nAMERICA\nBlaisdell Concert Hall\nSaturday\, August 5\, 7:30 pm\nTickets: $39\, $49\, $69\, $129\, plus applicable fees\n800‐745‐3000 / Ticketmaster.com \nPlease visit their website for more details. \n——– \nDate:\nSaturday\, August 5\, 2017 at 7:30 pm \nVenue:\nBlaisdell Concert Hall \nSale Date:\nSaturday\, June 17\, 2017 at 10:00 am \nTicket Value:\n$129 Orch AA—J\, Balc A—H\n$89 Orch K – P\, Balc J—M\n$69 Orch Q—X\, Balc N—Q\n$49 Orch Y—Z\, Balc R—S\nDisclaimer: Ticket prices are subject to change without notice.
