SUMMARY:The Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:The Nutcracker\nA Holiday Tradition with a Hawaiian Twist \nFriday\, December 15th at 7:30pm\nSaturday\, December 16th at 2:00pm\nSaturday\, December 16th at 7:30pm\nSunday\, December 17th at 2:00pm\nat the Blaisdell Concert Hall \nTickets available by phone: 800-745-3000 at the Blaisdell Box Office (open Monday – Saturday 9:00 to 5:00) or online at ticketmaster.com \nCelebrate the Holidays with Ballet Hawaii’s Nutcracker presented with a unique Hawaiian historical theme. Enjoy Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet re-interpreted and set in the 1858 Kingdom of Hawaii. \nWhat better way to celebrate the Holidays than by combining a timeless Nutcracker with the grandeur and elegance of the Hawaiian monarchy. Audiences can anticipate all the traditional holiday dance performances but with historical characterizations of Washington Place resident Mary Dominis and Hawaii’s beloved Queen Lili’uokalani. In this production\, the flowers are Crown\, Hibiscus and Plumeria. The birds are I’iwi and new island animal performers are introduced\, such as the Honu (sacred Hawaiian Turtle). The toy soldier uniforms are patterned after those of the Royal Guard and the famous waltz of the snowflakes takes place high upon the slopes of Mauna Kea. It truly is a delight to behold! \nThe inspiration for this special performance came when the creative team learned that Mary Dominis held a Christmas Eve children’s party at Washington Place in 1858. At the party Hawaii’s first Christmas tree was lit with candles as Saint Nicholas passed out candies and gifts for all. \nA customized production of this quality would not be possible without the support of such sponsors as Starwood Hotels & Resorts Waikiki\, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser\, Cades Foundation\, and many others. \nFor more information\, please visit their website http://ballethawaii.org/the-nutcracker/ \n—– \nDates:\nFriday\, December 15\, 2017 at 7:30 pm\nSaturday\, December 16\, 2017 at 2:00 pm & 7:30 pm\nSunday\, December 17\, 2017 at 2:00 pm \nVenue:\nBlaisdell Concert Hall \nSale Date:\nPresale with password (at all points of sale)\n(September 16\, 2017 at 10:00 am – September 21\, 2017 at 10:00 pm) \nPublic Sales\n(September 22\, 2017 at 10:00 am) \nTicket Value:\n$120.00 Orch A – L center seats / Balc A – J\n$79.00 Orch A – L side seats & rows M – P / Balc K – L\n$59.00 Orch Q – W center seats / Balc M – Q center seats\n$39.00 Orch X – Z & rows F – W side seats / Balc M – Q side seats & rows R – S \nDiscounts:\n$5 off all ticket prices except $39 – Military\, Seniors 62+ years\, Students thru College\n(Sold at the Blaisdell Box Office only with ID) \n10% off all prices except $39 – Group of 10+ (sold at all points of sale)

SUMMARY:Screening! "Livin' on the Rock"
DESCRIPTION:Livin’ On A Rock: A Big Island Music Story (20018)\nMovie trailer link: https://vimeo.com/244383160\n65 Min. Music Documentary from Snap Judgement Films \nDoors open at 6 pm. Film starts at 7pm. Q&A with Director & some of the featured musicians after screening.\nFree for all ages. Donations gladly excepted. \nSynopsis: \nLivin’ On a Rock tells the story of how a big island (Hawaii) shapes a small music scene. Starting with the famous tourist performer\, Bosco: The Amazing One-Man Band\, local filmmaker Steven Roby covers the island of Hawaii’s hard to find music scenes. \nDespite a limited number of tiny venues miles apart\, the musicians of Hawaii island have found ways to cultivate their craft. Whether it’s open mic nights\, farmer’s markets\, or low paying one night stands\, the tenacious performers are a sturdy bunch. Those who land steady resort gigs are the fortunate few who can say they have a full-time job in the music business. \nOne of the bright spots for the musicians is the annual Hawaii Songwriting Festival\, a three-day event where locals get insider tips from mainland Grammy and Emmy winners. Several of these instructors offer their insights about the Big Island scene throughout the film.

SUMMARY:Screening! "Livin' on the Rock"
DESCRIPTION:Livin’ On A Rock: A Big Island Music Story (20018)\n65 Min.\nMusic Documentary\nSnap Judgement Films \nDoors open at 6 pm. Film starts at 7pm. Q&A with Director & some of the featured musicians after screening.\nFree for all ages.\nDonations gladly excepted. \nMovie trailer link: https://vimeo.com/244383160

SUMMARY:Medicine Tribe Presents: Nahko - My Name is Bear
DESCRIPTION:Live In Hilo (The Big Island) on Thursday\, December 14th at The Palace Theatre! \nNahko (Nahkohe Parayno)\, a sixth generation Apache/Mohawk with a Puerto Rican/Indian mother and a Filipino father\, grew up with the family that adopted him in an Oregon suburb\, and suffered some early childhood identity problems until he began to ground himself in music\, taking up the piano at age six\, and in his teens\, he gave piano lessons and directed musical productions for local schools. His talents landed him a seasonal production position in Denali\, Alaska\, and there\, with the wilderness around him\, he began to put all the musical\, cultural\, and philosophical pieces of his personal creative vision together. \nSeeing music as international\, multi-generational\, and multicultural\, and as a redemptive and healing force\, he joined with his backing group\, Medicine for the People\, anchored by horn player and Berklee School of Music graduate Max Ribner and percussionist Hope Medford. Together they began making what has been called “thump-hop\,” a percussion heavy\, rainbow-envisioned mix of styles and approaches that is at times as much spoken word as anything else\, a sort of 21st century medicine show for the mind and soul. \nABOUT THIS SHOW\n-Price: $35 + fees\, *Prices increase day of show\n-Schedule: Doors open at 7pm\, Opening artists start at 8pm\, The show starts at 9pm\n-Venue: The Palace Theatre
