SUMMARY:Mele Mai Paka Lima Handbell Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Echo! Gyro! Martellato! Shake! No\, this isn’t the latest dance craze\, but some of the ringing techniques used by handbell ringers. Handbells are derived from the tower bells of England. “Change ringers” needed a way of practicing their melodies without disturbing the entire town\, and so\, handbells were developed. Soon\, the ringing of handbells became its own art form. Now there are handbell ensembles throughout the world\, and we are lucky to have the local ensemble Mele Mai Paki Lima to help us ring in the holiday season! \nProgram schedule is subject to change without notice. Contact the library at least 10 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.

SUMMARY:Plant Aloha (FREE Class) Fermented Foods w/ Jasmine Silverstein
DESCRIPTION:Hawaiian Sanctuary is proud to present: Plant Aloha\, a FREE educational series of sustainable farming classes. Every Thursday morning\, from 9:00am until 12:30pm\, with special Saturday monthly offerings\, led by local and visiting experts. Visit our website for more information:\nhttp://hawaiiansanctuary.com/plantaloha \nSaturday\, December 9th 2017 – 9:00am-1:00pm\nMake Your Own Probiotic-Rich Fermented Foods: Sauerkraut & Pickles with Jasmine Silverstein \nFermented foods have been a part of every ancient culture throughout history. Sauerkraut\, pickles\, and yogurt are a few of the many traditional live-cultured\, fermented foods. These foods developed out of the need to preserve food\, before refrigeration was possible. Modern food processing has inadvertently removed these whole\, fermented\, living foods from our diets\, and replaced them with processed\, refined\, low-nutrient substitutes. With the rise in health issues\, these probiotic-rich foods are more important than ever. Now you can learn how to make your own probiotic-rich foods at home! \nJasmine is the founder and owner of HeartBeet Catering\, a whole-foods based catering company based in Hilo\, HI. She offers personal chef services\, retreat catering\, gluten-free\, vegan wedding cakes\, and more. She began experimenting in the world of fermentation in 2011\, shortly after being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease\, a severe autoimmune condition. The benefits she has received from discovering and engaging in the world of microbes has proven to be invaluable. She hopes to inspire others to cultivate their own health by making their own ‘food medicine.’ http://heartbeetfood.com \nLocation:\nHawaiian Sanctuary – Laka Lounge\n13-3194 Pahoa Kalapana Rd (Highway 130). Pahoa\, HI 96778\nHawaii Island (Big Island)\nOnly about 1 Mile South of Pahoa Town.\nTurn into the driveway at Mile Marker 12! \nEach class starts promptly with a lecture and Q&A before hands-on farm learning ~ Come prepared with notepad and writing utensil\, closed toed shoes\, sun hat\, and gloves. \nPlant Aloha is supported\, in part\, by the County of Hawaii\, Research & Development. We are still looking for support to complete and enhance this amazing project.
