SUMMARY:Silversun Pickups Maui
DESCRIPTION:BAMP PROJECT PRESENTS: Silversun Pickups \nSilversun Pickups’ first new album in more than three years\, BETTER NATURE sees the Silverlake\, CA-based band partnering once again with producer Jacknife Lee (U2\, Two Door Cinema Club\, Crystal Castles)\, with whom they so successfully collaborated on 2012’s visionary NECK OF THE WOODS. Songs like “Friendly Fires” and “Cradle (Better Nature)” were created and crafted in Lee’s Topanga studio\, the band building out organically from Aubert’s spare songwriting demos. The result is fluid and freewheeling\,“oozy\,” in Aubert’s words\, with heavily cranked guitars\, propulsive rhythms\, and seemingly infinite textures. \nSilversun Pickups is among the most dynamic and creative rock bands of the modern era\, hailed far and wide for their inimitable merging of ethereal melodies and pure sonic force. From the indie rock opening salvo of 2005’s PIKUL EP to 2012’s far-reaching NECK OF THE WOODS\, each successive release has seen the Silverlake\, CA-based band boldly venture into uncharted terrain\, bravely pushing their imagination and ability towards new and surprising summits. BETTER NATURE marks the debut release from Silversun Pickups’ own New Machine Recordings. \nDetails on the Maui Show:\nDoors: 6:00pm (All ages accompanied by an adult)\nShow: 8:00pm (All ages accompanied by an adult)\nPrices: $36.00 General Admission plus applicable fees\, increase day of the show plus applicable fees\nThis is an all ages show accompanied by an adult. \nTickets available at:\nBampproject.com / MauiArts.org / MACC Box Office or charge by phone 808-242- 7469

SUMMARY:Wai and Kai: Water in Hawai'i
DESCRIPTION:North Kohala Public Library in Kapa'au will present a series of three “talk story” sessions on Hawai’i’s History with North Kohala historian\, Boyd D. Bond\, in August\, September\, and October 2016. \nThe first session at 6:30 p.m.on Monday\, August 8\, will focus on “Wai and Kai: Water in Hawaii”. As Bond says\, \n“Water is wealth in Hawaii\, providing food and life itself. Both fresh and salt water are home to endemic species of wildlife\, yet\, only 10% of the streams in Hawaii flow year round and droughts occur frequently. Kanawai\, the Hawaiian word for ‘law’ in modern Hawaii\, was the ancient code dictating water usage\, literally–sharing water. “ \nIn this talk story session\, Bond will compare traditional water use to the way water is used in Hawai'i today. \nIn the second presentation on Monday\, September 12\, Bond will describe “George Vancouver and his four voyages to Hawai'i ”. For the final program on Monday\, October 10\, Bond will discuss “Kū’ē Petitions\, early Hawaiian opposition to annexation”. \nEach hour long presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. \nBoyd Bond’s knowledge of Hawai'i’s history stems from his academic studies and from a lifetime spent in Hawaii as a 6th generation descendent of early western settlers in Hawaii. Boyd was raised in Hawai'i in a sugar plantation family\, living on plantations throughout the state. \nOf his interest in Hawaiian history\, Bond says\, “I can’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t immersed in it. Many of the stories of Hawai'i’s history are also our family stories.” Bond earned a BA in Hawaiian history from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and went on to earn a masters degree in education. \nCall the North Kohala Public Library at 889-6655 for more information. Contact the library three weeks in advance if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is required.

She embodies the passion and beauty of polo in the Aloha State and has been a vital member of Hawaii Polo since its inception over 50 years ago. As a polo player\, spouse of Hawaii Polo founder\, Fred W. Dailey\, mother of former Hawaii Polo General Manager (GM)\, Mike Dailey\, and grandmother of current GM Devon Dailey\, Murph has introduced thousands upon thousands of people to polo in Hawaii and beyond always extending a welcoming hand and positive spirit whether it be here in Mokuleia or on one of her many trips to polo meccas around the globe. \nSPECIAL GUEST: MAKANA\nBursting into the top of the Hawaii music scene while still in his teens\, Ki Ho'alu singer-songwriter\, Makana displayed international\, star talent from his earliest days of public performance. Since that time\, he has become a complete musician and person – musically both a student and ambassador of Hawaiian traditions while also a trailblazer of new sounds and approaches – personally\, pushing himself to continually explore\, stretch and grow. Whether touring alongside Joe Walsh and Bad Company (this past June / July)\, performing for President Obama and world leaders or stumping for political change\, Makana pours his heart and soul into everything he does and every note he plays. \nHAWAII CENTER FOR FOOD SAFETY FUNDRAISER\nHawaii Center for Food Safety (HCFS) recognizes the critical importance of sustainable agriculture in Hawaii and strives to move our state to a healthy existence through education\, community organizing and policy. With our geographic isolation and having 50% of our lands dedicated to (zoned for) agricultural use\, there's no denying the gravity of this need. On August 7th\, a portion of Hawaii Polo IN PERSON ticket proceeds will be donated to HCFS. \nALL INVITED\nAll are invited to join us as we salute Murph with a joy-filled celebration commensurate with all that she has given to us and our community. \nSunday in the Country! \nphoto: Cameron Brooks
