SUMMARY:Hawai'i's History with Boyd Bond
DESCRIPTION:North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau will present “Daily Life in World War II\,” a “talk story” session with North Kohala historian\, Boyd D. Bond\, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday March 6. \nIn the discussion\, Bond will share stories from the perspective of Hawaii’s civilian community as well as the military presence in Hawaii during the World War II years. \nOn Monday\, April 10\, Bond will discuss “Kamehameha IV: Alexander Liholiho and Queen Emma”. \nBoyd Bond’s knowledge of Hawaii’s history stems from his academic studies and from a lifetime spent in Hawaii as a 6th generation descendent of early western settlers in Hawaii. Boyd was raised in Hawaii in a sugar plantation family\, living on plantations throughout the state. \nOf his interest in Hawaiian history\, Bond says\, “I can’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t immersed in it. Many of the stories of Hawaii’s history are also our family stories.” Bond earned a BA in Hawaiian history from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and went on to earn a Masters Degree in Education. \nCall the North Kohala Public Library at 889-6655 for more information. Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 15 days in advance if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is required.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with HCFS Director Ashley Lukens. \nThe screening is brought to you by HCFS and HFUU's Oʻahu-Waiʻanae Chapter. The event is FREE and open to the public! \n“Island Earth” tells the story of the growing Hawaiian movement of people who are fed up with an industrial agricultural system that is reliant upon fossil fuels\, genetically engineered crops and pesticides. The documentary aspires to inform and inspire people to consciously participate in taking back our food supply. \n“Island Earth” is directed by the Emmy-winning filmmaker\, entrepreneur\, and professional surfer Cyrus Sutton.\nWATCH THE TRAILER: https://vimeo.com/110395636 \nNB! The theme of the evening is “Locavore Potluck” so feel free to bring a dish to pass. \nWe hope to see everyone there!

SUMMARY:Beginning Charleston
DESCRIPTION:The Charleston is a dance named for the harbor city of Charleston\, South Carolina. The rhythm was popularized in mainstream dance music in the United States by a 1923 tune called “The Charleston” by composer/pianist James P. Johnson which originated in the Broadway show Runnin' Wild and became one of the most popular hits of the decade. Runnin' Wild ran from 29 October 1923 through 28 June 1924. The peak year for the Charleston as a dance by the public was mid-1926 to 1927.
