DESCRIPTION:Primus – Presented by BAMP Project \n“It’s a story about gluttonous individuals sucking the colors out of the world\,” says Primus singer/bassist Les Claypool. “The overuse of resources by the greedy elite\, and how the meek masses can overcome them in the end by unifying. It seemed pretty relevant these days.” \nThe tale Claypool is describing comes from a 1978 children’s book called The Rainbow Goblins by the Italian author and artist Ui de Rico\, and it forms the basis for the new Primus album that came out on September 29\, The Desaturating Seven. In the story—which is accompanied by stunning illustrations\, done in oil paints on wood panels—seven goblins come to the valley where rainbows are born\, intending to steal the rainbows and eat them. The valley\, though\, knows that the goblins are coming\, and makes a plan to thwart the wicked creatures by hiding the rainbow. After the goblins are caught in their own nets\, the flowers release the colors of the rainbow and drown the goblins\, and in gratitude\, the rainbow turns the flowers into beautiful birds who fly across the valley in freedom. \n“My wife got turned onto it when she was a kid\, and we started reading it to my children when they were very young\,” says Claypool. “It became a bedtime story favorite. It always came across a bit frightening\, like an old Grimm’s fairy tale—a little dark and creepy\, which seemed very much up my strasse.” \nClaypool found particular inspiration in de Rico’s paintings for The Rainbow Goblins. “The artwork is just amazing\,” he says. “There’s a beauty but also a dark eeriness for this compelling\, sinister story. The paintings are incredible\, vibrant\, very unique looking—it’s a good contrast between dark and light visually and also metaphorically. And there’s always been a strong visual element to Primus.” \nIndeed\, taking inspiration from a wide range of sources was part of what made Primus one of the most distinctive\, innovative bands of the 1990s. The trio’s alt/punk/avant-­garde/psychedelic/country attack\, along with Claypool's surreal\, fever-­dream lyrics\, resulted in some of rock’s unlikeliest hits\, including “Tommy the Cat\,” “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver\,” and “Wynona's Big Brown Beaver.” The Desaturating Seven marks the return of the definitive Primus line-­up—Claypool\, guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde\, and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander—for its first album of original music since 1995. \nStarting as an underground phenomenon in San Francisco\, the band’s cult grew rapidly. Such albums as Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991)\, Pork Soda (1993)\, and Tales from the Punch Bowl (1995) all went gold and or platinum\, and Primus toured with some of rock's biggest names—U2\, Jane's Addiction\, Public Enemy\, Rush—and headlined the third Lollapalooza festival. \nAlexander left and rejoined Primus several times\, and Claypool alternated between the band and such other projects as Oysterhead (with Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland) and the Claypool Lennon Delirium\, alongside Sean Lennon. In 2014\, Alexander returned for the Primus & The Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble album\, on which the group covered the iconic soundtrack to the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. \nStaying in the fantasyland of children’s stories\, Claypool decided to tackle the adaptation of The Rainbow Goblins. “The challenge was to write music about goblins and rainbows and not come off overly clichéd\,” he says. “I didn’t want to be overly literal either—there are very few straight-­up lines from the book in the lyrics\, more like hints at metaphors.” He started off with the story’s climactic moment\, which became the nearly-­eight-­minute epic “The Storm.”\n“I wrote that and recorded some bass and vocals\, and I played it over the phone for Larry\,” says Claypool. “I worried that I was going too far down the 70’s art/prog path\, I didn’t want it to come off cheesy. But he loved it\, and then so did our manager\, which inspired me to keep going.” \nWith that central piece down\, Claypool started fleshing out the journey of the book\, creating an introduction\, “The Valley\,” that established some of the themes that thread through much of the music. From there\, it became a matter of working through the story and building a cohesive structure. \n“Originally it was going to be one giant piece\, but some parts didn’t match up\,” says Claypool. “You get these epiphanies and then you hit a wall—I was rolling along and then ‘The Trek’ really hung me up. ‘The Dream’ was an odd one\, tough to wrangle\, but a good contrast—very dark and sparse\, then there are these big percussive hits and then at the end\, away it goes\, into this early Peter Gabriel-­ish rhythm.” \nHaving to maintain a storyline represented a new sort of challenge for Claypool’s writing. “When you have a narrative\, it puts up parameters\,” he says. “It gives you interesting jumping-­off points\, but it can also make it more difficult. Those confines can propel you forward or hold you back a little bit. But using someone else’s art for inspiration certainly opens doors you wouldn’t on your own.” \nMusically\, The Desaturating Seven led Primus back to some of the sounds and styles of their earlier days. “This record hearkens back to our prog roots—Rush\, Yes\, Crimson\, all those things\,” says Claypool. “It’s a little heavier than the last record\, more intricate than anything we’ve done in a while.” \nWhich\, he adds\, made these songs ideal as a return to working with Tim Alexander on original material. “This stuff is totally In his wheelhouse\,” says \nClaypool. “Intricate and melodic drumming is what Tim does\, what naturally comes out of him.” From its inception\, Claypool approached The Desaturating Seven music with an eye toward presenting it on stage. “As I was laying it out\, I was already thinking about how it could be performed trunk-to-tail\,” he says. Now he’s in the process of planning a tour that will feature a complete performance of the new record—a show with a set of Primus material and then “an entire set of Goblin Rock\, with full production and fancy eye candy.”  \nFor Les Claypool\, sailing the seas of The Rainbow Goblins represents the completion of an idea he’s been kicking around for a long time. “Twenty years ago\, I thought it would be great to turn it into music someday\, but I’m just getting around to it now\,” he says. “It was kind of a back-burner thing—but as I get older\, I have to get through those\, because at some point\, I’m going to open up a hot dog stand and say goodbye.” In the end\, though\, for all its specific requirements and obstacles\, The Desaturating Seven came down to finding a way to let Primus be Primus. “Every time\, it’s like building the Golden Gate Bridge out of a pile of popsicle sticks\,” says Claypool. “You have a certain amount of sticks and you have to figure out how to make it work. But I’ve been working with these particular sticks for a long while\, so I tend to know where to put them.

It is FREE and open to the public. \nThis event features “The Kūʻē Petitions” with Lynda Saffery\, a presentation on the traveling installation sharing the truth of the anti-annexation petitions of 1897\, almost completely unknown until their rediscovery in 1996. Proof that nearly all of Hawaiʻi’s citizens did not approve of an annexation by the United States\, this petition was circulated by foot across the kingdom and was instrumental in ending initial U.S. Congressional efforts to annex Hawaiʻi in 1897. Today it stands as an enduring testament to Hawaiian self-determination.

But hold it in your head a minute\, feel its weight\, and you may recognize the phrase for what it is: a goal. In the era of the personal brand — amid the FOMO Age — it's increasingly hard to shed a stifling sense of self or to just be in the moment that you're in. Well\, consider this an invitation to get blissfully insignificant. That's what STRFKR founder Joshua Hodges aimed to do when he exiled himself to the desert to create this record\, but he returned with his most significant work yet: a set of darkly glistening dance songs rife with sticky beats\, ear-worming hooks\, philosophical heft\, and bittersweet beauty. \nThe album opens on “Tape Machine\,” and the difference is readily apparent. On 2013's Miracle Mile\, STRFKR refined a full-band sound\, but this doubles down on and completely reimagines the project's electronic and pop roots. The initial synths could fuel a rave\, and the ensuing groove could score a Drive sequel\, but the song is richer still\, with cosmic effects flying overhead and a psych-folk earthiness below. It isn't that the band sat this LP out — drummer (etc.) Keil Corcoran penned the thick astral disco of “In the End\,” and he and bassist (etc.) Shawn Glassford both pitch in throughout. But Being No One\, Going Nowhere was born in Joshua Tree after Hodges packed up his Los Angeles apartment and moved to that tiny Mojave outpost under the great big sky. “It came together for me in the desert\,” he says. “Out there\, it's easy to feel small and slow.” \nWhen Hodges started STRFKR in 2007\, it was designed to be success-proof. The name was both unfit for radio and a jab at fame-chasers. But the project was also meant to be bright\, playful and brimming with energy. He stumbled upon a winning juxtaposition that's a STRFKR staple to this day: dark (or heavy) lyrics set to happy music. Hodges credits that to Elliott Smith's influence\, although Being No One\, Going Nowhere has closer sonic kin in Italo-disco\, kosmische musik and Tony Hoffer's work with Phoenix\, Beck\, and M83. English thinker/writer Alan Watts\, a scholar of Eastern philosophy\, was another muse for Hodges — his voice appears on nearly every STRFKR release\, including this one. That's him on “interspace\,” talking about sloughing off preconceived identity to find one's place in the universe\, which is the story of Hodges' eventual career: stop trying — no\, start not trying — and succeed. \nThis album's name actually paraphrases the title of a book by Ayya Khema\, a Buddhist nun\, but the concept came to Hodges in a less chaste setting. “I had an experience at a BDSM club that was really freeing\,” he says. “I realized that the appeal is letting go of your mind and stress. You can be super present with the pain\, and then the pain isn't even pain. It's a gateway to freedom.” In a way\, each song on Being No One\, Going Nowhere seeks that end. There's the reality-refracting fantasy of “Never Ever\,” the hard truths about addiction's ravages on “Tape Machine\,” a death-defying coming of age tale on “Open Your Eyes\,” and references to Hermann Hesse's 1919 novel of self-realization\, Demian\, on “When I'm With You.” If the words don't set you free\, the music — exuberant\, enveloping\, incredibly catchy — should do so handily. \nNone of which is to imply that STRFKR is drifting along aimlessly. To the contrary\, Hodges crafted this album's dance bent with the stage in mind. The live setup these days includes a custom-made LED wall and a homemade light shows that syncs with the rhythm of the songs (also\, the occasional crowd-surfing astronaut and band-in-drag). Plus\, he camped out at the house of producer Jeffrey Brodsky (Yacht\, RAC) for a week and a half\, working all hours to ensure Being No One\, Going Nowhere sounds as crisply booming over PAs as it does in headphones. Even if Hodges is too busy pushing the future of indie dance-pop forward to possibly attain his goal of unplugging\, his aspiration is everything: “Existing is it. DESCRIPTION:The Aloha ‘Āina Recycling Drive will be at Kalihi Elementary School from 9:00am – 12:00pm on Saturday\, April 28\, 2018. \nStop by to drop off miscellaneous recyclable items! We will be collecting:\n-Scrap metal (bicycles\, refrigerators\, other appliances\, etc.)\n-Electronics (including computers\, TVs\, laptops\, printer\n-Cartridges\, cell phones\, cameras\, game systems\, & more)\n-Batteries (household\, vehicle & other batteries)\n-Clothing & Household items\n-Used household cooking oil\n-HI-5 beverage cans & bottles\n-Confidential documents will be collected in locked bins by Goodwill Hawaiʻi and shredded securely at their headquarters. \nProceeds from HI-5 containers\, scrap metal and used cooking oil will serve as a fundraiser for the host school! \nFor more information contact 3rs@kokuahawaiifoundation.org. \nThe Aloha ʻĀina Recycling Drives are coordinated by Kokua Hawaii Foundation as part of the 3R's School Recycling Program and are made possible through sponsorship from Schnitzer Steel Industries and support from other local recycling partners including Pacific Biodiesel\, Goodwill Hawaii\, T&N Computer Recycling\, Interstate Batteries\, RRR Recycling Services\, and Aloha Overstock! \nAloha ʻĀina Recycling Drives (AARD) are back for the 2017-2018 school year! This year\, we are hosting 18 AARDs at schools across Oʻahu. All events are held on Saturdays from 9:00am – 12:00pm. Below is the last Drive of the school year: \nMay 12th\, 2018: Moanalua Elementary & Middle School \nAARDs provide opportunities for schools\, families & community members to drop off a variety of goods for reuse and recycling.

DESCRIPTION:The Ellison Onizuka Day of Exploration: A Scout service to the Community presented by the Queen’s Health Systems was created as a new signature event showcasing over 100 STEM-base activities\, experiments and workshops that are FREE and open to the public. \nThis colossal STEMfest\, a first-of-its-kind in Hawaii\, is being geared to families with children in the 5 to 14-year-old range looking for FUN activities that will introduce children to the wonders of Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Math and hopefully inspire them to further explore these areas through school-based programs\, community-sponsored programs like Scouting or on their own. \nScouting has a long historical connection to STEM oriented fields. Of the over 100 plus merit badges over 35% of are STEM-focused. With over 12\,000 youth throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Basin\, the Scouts of the Aloha Council are perfectly positioned to host this event for all keiki of Hawaii in honor of Eagle Scout Onizuka\, who was dedicated to the “love of space and science.” \nDate:\nSaturday\, April 28\, 2018 at 9:00 am – 3:00 pm \nVenue:\nBlaisdell Exhibition Hall \nAdmission:\nFree
