SUMMARY:East African Vegan Cooking
DESCRIPTION:Come learn how to cook three staple dishes from Uganda (East Africa). These recipes are traditional and great for building your health. We will be cooking Ugandan-style groundnut sauce\, chapatti\, rice\, and mushroom soup. \n-Learn to Cook Traditional African Recipes\n-Follow the Principles of “Food is medicine only when you eat the\n right food” and “Eat to live not to die”\n-Learn more about Uganda\, including the food\, the people\, the\n music\, and the land. \nMy name is Henry Kisitu\, I was born and raised in Uganda. I began cooking at a very young age and have loved it ever since. When my grandmother took me in at the age of three\, after the passing of my parents\, she taught me how to cook. In Uganda\, learning how to cook is more than just following a recipe\, it is about honoring the earth\, learning how the food is grown\, and learning the values of being human. I was grateful for her care and for these important lessons. At the age of 5\, my lovely grandmother also passed away and I had to move again\, this time to my uncle’s place where I lived until the age of 19. At 19 I got scholarship to study at the University of Saint Thomas in Minnesota and from that point my life change for the better. I met my wife in Minnesota and we have two beautiful kids now. I also got my degree in general business management and my masters in human resources and change leadership. There are many things I like to do in life\, but cooking has remained my most cherished pastime. I love how food brings people to the earth and people to one another. So please join me for this class. Let’s connect\, learn\, and share in the blessing of good food. \n$20/Student\, Registration Required \nRegister Now: http://d2e.co/eastafricancooking \nFor more information\, please call (808) 947-3249. \n48 Hour Cancellation Policy for Refunds and Cancellations. Class will require reservations by at least 5 people. To make your reservation please call our Marketing Office at 947-3249 or sign up on Eventbrite. In the event of cancellation (3 days before event) everyone who signed up will be notified by email and phone. Walk-ins are welcome\, however it's a good idea to call us to make sure event is still on.

SUMMARY:Book Club - Picture Bride
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly book discussion! \nFrom the moment we meet Haru\, we fall in love with this proud girl of silk and steel. To escape being sold into prostitution in turn-of-the-century Japan\, Haru takes refuge in a Buddhist temple\, but happiness there is fleeting. Betrayed by her best friend\, she flees to Hawaii\, a strange new world where the young picture bride finds herself with a husband who doesn’t want her and surrounded by a widespread distrust of Japanese immigrants. As Haru’s marriage flourishes and then falters\, she emerges as a strongminded community leader. Having once pledged to produce sons to fight for the emperor\, she dedicates herself to raising American children loyal to the Stars and Stripes. From the shrines of Kyushu to the shores of the Territory of Hawaii\, Picture Bride is the sweeping saga of Japanese immigrants who survived–and thrived–against great odds. \nProgram schedule is subject to change. Contact the library (10 days for Oahu; 15 days for neighbor islands) in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
