SUMMARY:Flower Vases of Tea Ceremony Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The hanaire (flower vase) with chabana (flowers) and ojiku (scroll) are prominently displayed in the alcove of a tea room.  Each guest in a tea ceremony visits the alcove and respectfully views these tea utensils prior to the tea ceremony (sadou).  As such\, the hanaire plays a very important role in sadou.  This exhibit of traditional hanaire is presented by Shofu Kai\, a group of ceramists at the Hawai’i Potters’ Guild who have been studying together to learn about the artistry of utensils used in the Japanese tea ceremony\, a cornerstone of Japanese culture.

They are home to ‘opae ‘ula (red shrimp)\, a tiny species of shrimp that are found only in the Hawaiian Islands. \nProgram participants will have the opportunity to see live ‘opae ‘ula up close\, and will create a paper puppet replica to take home. Program is suitable for children in grades K-5\, and is limited to the first 20 patrons. Children must be accompanied by a parent or an adult caregiver. \nRSVP online at http://www.librarieshawaii.org.\nReservation period will open on September 27 and will close on October 10 while availability lasts.
