SUMMARY:Forward Bending: Moving Forward into the Past
DESCRIPTION:When we practice forward bends in our asana practice\, we become acutely aware of tightness in our hamstrings or hips\, sensitivity in our lower backs or fear\, anger or sadness that arise seemingly out of the blue. Forward bends take us into our past\, giving us opportunities to resolve deep psychological issues which over time have become lodged in the joints\, muscles\, organs and other tissues of our bodies. Forward bends activate the second chakra – swadhishthana chakra – located at the level of the sacrum\, pelvis\, hips and groin. \nForward bends yield many physical benefits. They tone the abdominal glands and organs; they improve digestion; and they can relieve menstrual cramps. These asanas also tone and strengthen the hip flexors and the muscles on the entire front of the body\, while increasing the freedom of the muscles on the back of the body\, including the hamstrings. The forward bending position is a humble position\, a position of surrender and letting go. A consistent forward bend practice can help develop humility\, patience\, endurance and focus. Forward bending offers a chance to reflect on and heal the past\, leaving you free to move forward effortlessly into the future. \nThe first 2 hours will include Meditation\, Chanting & Asana Practice\, followed by an asana lab: breaking down and exploring several forward bends (Uttanasana\, Paschimottanasana\, Baddha Konasana\,etc). This workshop is OPEN to all levels. \nBanka Jennifer Schneider has spent much of her life as a seeker\, student\, and spiritual practitioner. In 2003 Banka completed her first teacher training at Kalani with Kathy Elder. Her second yoga teacher training\, in 2007\, was in the Sivananda method. Space is limited\, so if you are interested\, don't delay in signing up! Dates of each workshop is Sept. 9\, 23 and 30 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. \nThe Hawaiian Arts Program at Molokai Arts Center\, with support from Hawaii Tourism Authority and Hawaii People’s Fund\, will be hosting a series of workshops this month on the making and skills of ma’a\, or the “Hawaiian slingshot.” The ma’a was the long range weapon of choice in ancient Hawaii\, being easily portable and renewable\, as well as accurate and effective. All Hawaiian Arts Classes are free of charge\, but space is very limited\, so register early. To register\, contact molokainuiahina@gmail.com. \nThe first workshop in this series of three\, will be on the making of the ma’a itself on Saturday\, September 9th from 9am to 5pm. The second will be on Saturday\, September 23\, focusing on the making of ma’a pohaku\, or sling stones. The third will be on Saturday\, September 30 on the use and practice of ma’a. The location of the workshops will be confirmed upon being registered. \nThe Hawaiian Arts Program is in its pilot year\, and is focusing on fostering\, teaching and preserving traditional and emerging Native Hawaiian art forms\, and doing so in a Native Hawaiian way. This program has been generously supported by the Hawaiian Tourism Authority\, Hawaii People’s Fund and private donations. Past workshops have included a tools and weapons talk story\, a workshop on making niho oki\, a cutting tool\, and ‘upena\, or net making. There will be a lot more to come\, so stay tuned! If you are not on our email newsletter list\, please sign up for it here.
