SUMMARY:Free Lecture: "What a Fish Knows"- Jonathan Balcombe\, PhD. KAUAI
DESCRIPTION:The Vegetarian Society of Hawaii's Monthly Lecture Series is FREE and open to the public. Speakers come from a wide range of backgrounds to talk about topics like diet\, environmentalism\, sustianability and much more. To learn more\, please visit the VSH website here at vsh.org \nThis month\, the VSH presents “What a Fish Knows” by Jonathan Balcombe\, PhD. \nIn this dynamic\, richly illustrated presentation\, ethologist Jonathan Balcombe takes us under the sea\, through streams and estuaries\, and to the other side of the aquarium glass to reveal the surprising capabilities of fishes. Although they exceed thirty thousand species ? more than all mammals\, birds\, reptiles\, and amphibians combined ? fishes are rarely considered by us to be individuals with thoughts\, feelings\, and experiences. Combining science with stories and the author’s own personal experiences\, What A Fish Knows upends our common biases toward fishes as primitive and dull\, showing them instead to be sentient\, aware\, social\, and even Machiavellian. \nJonathan Balcombe is the director of animal sentience at the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy and the author of a number of books\, including Second Nature\, Pleasurable Kingdom\, and the newly released New York Times bestseller What A Fish Knows. Balcombe has three biology degrees\, including a PhD in ethology from the University of Tennessee\, where he studied communication in bats. A popular commentator\, he has appeared on Fresh Air with Terry Gross\, the BBC\, and the National Geographic Channel\, and in several documentaries\, and has contributed features and opinions to The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, Nature\, and other publications. He lives in Florida. Find him on Facebook\, follow him on Twitter at @Jonathanpb1959\, and visit his website at jonathan-balcombe.com \nThis lecture will also be held on Maui on Thursday\, June 15th \nFor more information\, please visit the VSH website at vsh.org

SUMMARY:Writers' Group
DESCRIPTION:All aspiring writers are invited to come together. Facilitator Eila Algood will moderate the meetings to give the participants a chance to practice writing\, discuss writing skills\, share their work\, enjoy useful feedback\, and share the joys and frustrations of the writing life. Algood\, a poet and writer herself\, has participated in other writing groups. She counts herself among the many writers who find value in the support of a writers’ network. \nAnyone interested in writing is invited to the monthly meetings—beginning writers to published authors\, the timid\, the brave\, serious writers or amateur scribblers\, the prolific and especially—the blocked. \nWriters are invited to bring samples of their work if they care to share\, however\, this is not necessary. All are welcome to listen\, to learn\, and to be inspired. Algood asks that everyone bring a pen and paper for writing. \nProgram schedule is subject to change. Program is intended for patrons ages 12 and older. For additional information on the writers’ group at North Kohala Public Library or to arrange special accommodation\, contact Janet Lam at 889-6655.
