The rhythm was popularized in mainstream dance music in the United States by a 1923 tune called “The Charleston” by composer/pianist James P. Johnson which originated in the Broadway show Runnin' Wild and became one of the most popular hits of the decade. Runnin' Wild ran from 29 October 1923 through 28 June 1924. The peak year for the Charleston as a dance by the public was mid-1926 to 1927.

DESCRIPTION:We're celebrating our 25th Anniversary of inspiring teens to read during the summer with an O'ahu Teen Summer Reading Finale at the Windward Mall Center Stage.\n	Since 1992\, the HSPLS Teen Summer Reading Program has had more than 80\,000 participants from grades 6 to 12\, and they have read more than half-a-million books!  As a way of encouraging teens to read and “Build a Better World\,” those who participated in the 2017 Summer Reading Program were entered into a lucky drawing.  A total of 24 Oahu teens were selected in the drawing to vie for a chance to win the Grand Prize of a Chromebook computer and other exciting “tech gadget” prizes.\n	Hawaii Pizza Hut is the corporate Teen SRP sponsor\, and has supported the Teen Summer Reading Program for the past 25 years providing fabulous prizes for the Finale event as well as teen prize drawings at the 26 Neighbor Island public libraries.  At this event\, each teen will participate in a game featuring pizza boxes with a special prize inside.\n	The Friends of the Library of Hawaii sponsors the entertainment portion of the Finale and is the major sponsor of the annual HSPLS Summer Reading Program for keiki\, teens\, adults\, and kupuna.\n	Radio Personality Lina Girl of Krater 96.3 FM\, a devoted library patron\, returns to emcee this year’s event.  State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich will be there to congratulate the winners and participate in the program.\n	Teen award-winning vocalist and ukulele performer Karlie Goya\, aka Karlie G\, will perform during intermission.  Fifteen-year-old Karlie has won numerous ukulele/vocal competitions including the prestigious Ukulele International Contest\, Duke’s Ukes\, and the 2015 Brown Bags to Stardom.\n	 “We are very excited to celebrate the reading achievements of teens this summer\, and extremely grateful to Hawaii Pizza Hut for their continuing support and providing great incentives for reading\,” said State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich.

With this group\, FKH has hosted 100 people (children\, babies and mom)\, and we are grateful this becomes possible thanks to your generous support . \nWe are going to have these childrenin Hawaii (away from constant exposure to  radiation) until they go home on Aug 21.  4 full weeks of respite and eating fresh organic prouce will enhance their life force\, that is the whole point of this program.   \nThey will be mostly in Kona at Huehue Ranch\, then go to Hilo for 5 days\, the homestay with American families for 3 nights 4 days.
