DESCRIPTION:Award winning Slack Key\, Folk Rocker\, Millicent Cummings presents a timely musical odyssey entitled\, ‘Altar Native'\, (Revisited). Several of the songs to be performed were presented by Hawai'i Public Radio in 2008\, the live recording of which was a Hoku Award Nominee. She will also be performing many new songs written over the past 14 years for each of the eight Hawaiian Islands about the inspiring beauty of Hawai'i\, as well as the tragic paradoxes that simultaneously exist.\nMusically\, this presentation is as diverse as the people who coexist here\, dancing from one genre to another…Through the ruckus terrain of Rock and Roll\, the peaceful shores of the tender ballad and even the playful satire of the Irish dirge…Each in their own unique\, slack key tunings for both guitar and ukulele.\nCummings has chosen to give a solo concert this time\, unaccompanied and genuine…A time when the Hawaiian people and supporters of indigenous rights are uniting for a more sustainable future. She is an Aloha Aina Warrior\, having played benefit concerts\, produced festivals\, rallied and volunteered countless hours on Kaho'olawe\, Kaua'i\, O'ahu\, Moloka'i and the Big Island in restoration and preservation projects. This dynamic\, eco-feminist songwriter sings with Aloha-filled\, positive messages to honor the Land and the Children of the Land at a furtive and important cross roads in Hawaiian history. \nThis One Night Only concert will be held in the theater at the Hawai'i Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Hilo from 7 to 9 PM. DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month – celebrate both by joining us for an evening of inspiration & entertainment as we seek to end violence against women through creative expression & financial support for the YWCA of Hawai'i Island Sexual Assault Support Services. \nA Poetry Slam is a fun and competitive poetry event where poets are awarded prizes based on audience support for their performance. For the Slam Against Violence\, we will be mixing it up a bit\, so please read below for the basic rules: \nBring a poem (or a story or song\, but no instruments please) that helps make the world safer for women. Perhaps it honors an important woman in your life\, exposes the tragedy of sexual assault\, or celebrates the wisdom & contributions of women in our local or global community. It can be your own work\, or that of another poet or artist. You’ll have 3 minutes to perform the poem on stage (memorization is great\, but not required). \nIn exchange for a donation of any amount\, audience members will have the opportunity to honor the performers by giving lei to the poets of their choice. The poets with the most lei at the end of the night will win prizes. So\, bring poetry to share and cash to support YWCA of Hawai'i Island Sexual Assault Support Services. And be prepared to have a great time with your Hawai’i Island ‘ohana in a creative\, supportive and inspiring atmosphere!
