SUMMARY:Make Your Own Transverse Flute
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn how to make your own transverse flute? \nWhen: Thursday\, Dec. 28th\, 2017\nTime: 4:30 pm- 7:30 pm\nWhere: Molokai Arts Center\nFee: $24 for current MAC members\, $30 for non members \nLearn to build a transverse flute out of PVC \nThe flute is one of the world’s oldest musical instruments\, made by humans as early as the Stone Age out of bamboo\, reeds\, ceramic and hollow bones. There are many different styles of flute made and mastered by cultures all over the world\, from clay ocarinas in South and Central America\, to bamboo shakuhachi in Japan\, to the metal transverse flutes most of us are familiar with in the Western symphony. Early Hawaiians had a version\, still used today\, called ‘ohe hano ihu\, which is blown with the nose. To make and play the flute is to connect with our earliest roots. \nThe Molokai Arts Center (MAC) will be hosting a class on making a playable transverse flute out of PVC pipe on Thursday\, December 28th from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. The workshop is open to teens and adults\, and participants will get to take home a completed flute they have made. It will be taught by Molokai born and raised hobbyist flute maker Ted Kanemitsu\, who has posted a video of playing one of his homemade flutes online\, viewable at https://youtu.be/bYvg5yQZ5nA. (The flute shown is a different kind than what will be made in the workshop.) The type of flute made at this workshop will be a transverse style (held horizontally)\, with six open finger holes and blown with the mouth. This configuration can play 2 octaves or more and in several keys. Flutes made of PVC pipe produce a surprisingly beautiful tone\, and have the benefit of being inexpensive to make. \nThe workshop is $24 for MAC Members/$30 for nonmembers. You can reserve your space in the class by going to http://www.molokaiartscenter.com and paying for it using the tab which says “Flute Making Workshop” on the homepage. Space is very limited\, so don’t delay. If you have questions\, email molokaiartscenter@gmail.com. \nNote: the workshop also includes making the flute stand to go with your flute!
