SUMMARY:Hanaire of Sadou Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The hanaire (flower vase) with chabana (flowers) and ojiku (scroll) are prominently displayed in the alcove of a tea room. Each guest in a tea ceremony visits the alcove and respectfully views these tea utensils prior to the tea ceremony (sadou). As such\, the hanaire plays a very important role in sadou. This exhibit of traditional hanaire is presented by Shofu Kai\, a group of ceramists at the Hawai’i Potters’ Guild who have been studying together to learn about the artistry of utensils used in the Japanese tea ceremony\, a cornerstone of Japanese culture.

SUMMARY:Surfrider Nets & Plastics Send Off Party
DESCRIPTION:All of the nets that we have been removing from the beach and reefs have been stock piled waiting to collect enough to send to H-Power on Oahu to be burnt for electricity rather than filling up the landfills. With the assistance of heavy equipment\, we will be loading over 15 tons of nets and plastic into a Matson 40 ft container to ship to Oahu. We would like everyone that has participated in any way and even those who haven’t participated yet but will in the future to come and have a small celebration for all our hard work to remove this debris from our reefs and beaches. \nThe equipment will do most of the work for us\, but we will bring some gloves and rakes to pick up the small debris. While being the debris is loaded in the container we will socialize. The refreshment will be provided. It is not necessary\, but feel free to bring any other food items to share. This would be a great time to come by and learn more about Surfrider Foundation – become a member- re-new your membership- buy a T- Shirt! We hope to see you there!\nMahalo to all the volunteers\nFor more info Call 808-635-2593

SUMMARY:Plant Aloha Free Class: Cooking Locally Grown Food w/ Wade Bauer
DESCRIPTION:Hawaiian Sanctuary is proud to present: Plant Aloha\, a FREE educational series of sustainable farming classes. Every Thursday morning\, from 9:00am until 12:30pm\, with special Saturday monthly offerings\, led by local and visiting experts. Visit our website for more information:\nhttp://hawaiiansanctuary.com/plantaloha \nSaturday\, October 21st 2017 – 9:00am-1:00pm\nCooking With Local Grown Food with Wade Bauer.\nThis special Saturday is the 24th (and final class) of Wade’s Permaculture Series this year. Adopting a local diet and figuring out how to use new food plants is often more challenging than growing most of the food! Bring your favorite local grown food and recipes to share! \nThis class is part of the Plant Aloha Permaculture Series facilitated by Wade Bauer\, the Primary Permaculture Lecturer and Permaculture Intern Supervisor at Hawaiian Sanctuary. Wade has taught Permaculture for over 13 years\, with 10 years in Hawaii. He has a B.S. in Environmental Biology and is the founder of Malama Aina Permaculture: Edible Landscape Design\, Education\, and Nursery. Wade's farm in Kapoho is focused on being a demonstration site modeling a locally appropriate sustainable homestead. \nContact:\nWade Bauer 248-245-9483\nWadeBauer@gmail.com\nMalama Aina Permaculture: Edible Landscape Design\, Education & Nursery\nhttp://hawaii-permaculture-institute.weebly.com/ \nThe goal is to teach local residents how to efficiently grow their own food at home to provide a fresh organic balanced diet. From field or backyard to table all the crops necessary are covered including their propagation\, cultivation\, harvest\, preservation\, and use. Permaculture tools and techniques focus on easy and practical ways to create food abundance at home. Every class is a blend of practical theory and hands on projects. Occasionally\, free plant starts will be available. \nLocally\, this series will help increase food security and resiliency to natural disaster in Hawaii by relocalizing and diversifying our food supply. Globally\, this series also helps reduce transportation of food\, which will decrease carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. Culturally\, these classes cover polynesian and pacific island crops and farming methods\, which help preserve traditional Hawaiian horticultural practices. Plants from around the world that are already in use in Hawaii\, will be highlighted\, showcasing the multicultural heritage that makes present day Hawaii and our grinds unique and ono-licious. \nEach class starts promptly with a lecture and Q&A before hands-on farm learning ~ Come prepared with notepad and writing utensil\, closed toed shoes\, sun hat\, and gloves. \nPlant Aloha is supported\, in part\, by the County of Hawaii\, Research & Development. We are still looking for support to complete and enhance this amazing project. Please give what you can:\nhttp://hawaiiansanctuary.com/donate \nLocation:\nHawaiian Sanctuary – Laka Lounge\n13-3194 Pahoa Kalapana Rd (Highway 130). SUMMARY:Hot Hip Holy Jivamukti Yoga Series with Banka

SUMMARY:Honey Harvesting & Processing
DESCRIPTION:Do you love honey? Wanna get sticky and harvest some to eat fresh from the hive?! \nJoin Paradise Nectar Apiaries and Kalani on May 20th to harvest and sample some of the delicious treats from the hive. Fresh pollen\, nectar\, and honey! Oh my! \nLearn how to process hive products from the hive to the jar. We will also be discussing other value-added hive products and how to make them. \nJen Rasmussen started learning about bees about eight years ago here on the Big Island. After a few months working with bees\, several pests & diseases made their way to the Big Island. The learning curve was rough for many bees & their keepers. Several beekeepers lost their bees and struggled to recover. At this time Jen Rasmussen began her journey learning how to care for bees with these new pests & diseases without the use of chemical treatments. \nOver the years the bees have grown strong and capable of protecting and sustaining their hives. It may be witnessed at Paradise Nectar Apiaries\, even after many losses\, the strong bees survive\, and create the new hives that will repopulate the apiary. Jen Rasmussen encourages strong hygienic behavior in the hives and teaches how to provide preventative hive management that will keep the bees healthy and strong. \nTo learn more about intuitive treatment-free beekeeping visit http://www.paradisenectar.com and like the Paradise Nectar Apiaries facebook page. \n~All proceeds will benefit the bee-keeping efforts at Kalani~ \nLocation: Kalani. 12-6860 Kalapana Kapoho Road\, Pahoa\, HI 96778\nAdmission: $35 Guests\, $30 Kama’aina\, $10 Kalani Volunteers\nReservations: Call Tony at 808-965-0468 ext. 108 or tony@kalani.com.
