SUMMARY:“He Lawai’a: The Art of Fishing (Talk Story)
DESCRIPTION:The Molokai Arts Center\, in partnership with Ka Honua Momona\, is presenting their second Hawaiian Arts Program talk story\, “He Lawai’a: The Art of Fishing” with Uncle Apo Aquino and Uncle Mac Poepoe on Friday\, April 28th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The event will take place at Ka Honua Momona’s Hale Momona at the fishpond restoration site 3 miles east of Kaunakakai. This event is free of charge. \nThe resources of the ocean have always been important to survival in the Hawaiian islands. Not only have the tools and techniques used in fishing been honed to a fine art over centuries\, but so has the management of fishing resources—one cannot separate the tools of fishing from the greater ethic of the fisherman. Uncle Apo and Uncle Mac will discuss making fishing tools\, as well as the responsibility of the fisherman\, different perspectives on the craft and different stylistic approaches. There will be a question and answer period at the end. Families are encouraged to attend\, and bring a dish to share. This talk story comes in advance of a hands-on workshop in May with Uncle Apo on making scoop nets\, a beginning step in learning how to make ‘upena (throw nets). The details of that workshop are to be announced. For questions\, email MolokaiArtsCenter@gmail.com.

Sign up for the BAMP Blast for the Pre-Sale Offer no late than 12pm this Wednesday at BampProject.com on the bottom of the home page. Select “Indie” & any other genres you are interested in. This is an all ages accompanied by an adult event. \nThe four-piece band from Iceland who now call the US home. Call it a split upbringing: the isolated heritage that results from coming of age in Iceland has paired with the fresh inspiration of moving to America\, and the band has built a sound to match the disparate landscapes. A gorgeous and raucous blend of rock\, folk and blues\, Kaleo’s debut LP embodies that very spirit of duality: titled A/B\, the album showcases the band’s multi-layered dynamics and ability to play different genres with equal skill. \nBest friends since attending elementary school outside of Reykjavik\, bandleader JJ Julius Son\, drummer David Antonsson\, and bassist Daniel Kristjansson began playing together at the age of 17 before adding guitarist Rubin Pollock to the mix in 2012. They named the band Kaleo\, which means “thesound” in Hawaiian\, and started their career in with a handful of well-received shows at the 2012 Iceland Airwaves music festival. The band signed to Elektra/Atlantic and moved to the States in early 2015\, choosing Austin as their new base. \nTickets available at:\nFlavorus.com / BampProject.com / JointheRepublik.com / Local Motion Stores / Navy/Hickam ITT Offices / Army LTS Offices / UH Campus Center / The Republik Box Office Tuesday through Friday 10:00am until 6:00pm with a $2.00 service fee per ticket.
