SUMMARY:Symmetry in Islamic Art
DESCRIPTION:Through hands-on activities in origami\, cutting\, and coloring\, participants of all ages will enjoy creating designs and patterns. In these patterns we will find symmetry and geometry also present in works of Islamic art that can be seen at Shangri La\, Doris Duke’s home in Honolulu\, which is now a museum of Islamic art. Workshop leaders Carol Bier and David Masunaga are world-renowned for their study of geometric patterns; they will guide us through connections that tell us about intriguing and far-reaching geometric principles which lead us to an understanding of Islamic art.

SUMMARY:Meditative Coloring
DESCRIPTION:Can you remember the sense of peace and enjoyment you felt while coloring as a child? Can coloring help you relax? \nFrom choosing colors to the gentle\, repetitive motion of your hands as you bring color to paper\, coloring can be seen as a form of “active meditation”. Oftentimes\, when you think of meditation\, you think of sitting still for a long period of time. With active meditation\, it is just the opposite: repetitive motions such as coloring cna help strengthen your focus and easily shift your attention back to a relaxed state. Stressful thoughts and future worries can be simply pushed aside as you take time to enjoy the present. \nProgram schedule is subject to change. Program is suitable for ages 16 and older. All materials will be supplied. Feel free to bring your favorite pencils\, pens\, or pastels. To arrange a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation\, please call the hosting library as soon as possible: 323-7585.
