DESCRIPTION:Dr. Susan Jarvi of the University of Hawai'i at Hilo will give a presentation on Rat Lungworm Disease. At least 60 cases of rat lungworm disease have been documented in people in Hawai'i\, most of them from the Puna district of the island. Effects can be mild and flu-like\, but some infected people have developed long-term disabilities\, and some have died. \nDr. Jarvi will explain important precautions we can take to protect ourselves\, and she will outline her research and education efforts as part of the Hawai'i Island Rat Lungworm Disease Working Group. She will also talk about the cost and impact the disease has made. \nProgram is free and is suitable for people ages 12 and older. Program schedule is subject to change. \nFor more information or to arrange a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation\, please call the hosting library at least 10 days in advance: 327-4327.

DESCRIPTION:BAMP Project presents Less Than Jake & Reel Big Fish performing live in Honolulu at The Republik\, Tuesday\, October 6th\, 2015. This is an all ages accompanied by an adult event. \nLess Than Jake: Less Than Jake are back! “But they never went anywhere\,” you protest. Well reader\, in that sense you are correct. But this fall they're not only serving up their first full-length in five years\, but— after more than two decades together—also embracing a total back to basics approach. Throughout  a  career  that  has  run  the  gamut  from  self-releases  and  small  indie  imprints  to  large independent labels and major music conglomerates\, the band has always been more than the sum of its  parts.  Now  more  than  ever\,  though\,  they  espouse their  stature  as  a  DIY  collective  that  works together—or at least in tandem with a few trusted allies—on every element of their creative output. Drummer  Vinnie  Fiorello  recalls\,  “We started  out  very  internal\,  and  nowadays  we  handle  a  lot internally again.” \nReel Big Fish: Reel Big Fish was one of the legions of Southern California ska-punk bands to edge into the mainstream following the mid-’90s success of No Doubt and Sublime. Like most of their peers\, the band was distinguished by their hyperkinetic stage shows\, juvenile humor\, ironic covers of new wave pop songs\, and metallic shards of ska. The group cultivated an underground following that broke into the mainstream in summer 1997\, when their single “Sell Out” became a modern rock radio and MTV favorite. Their appearance in the movie “Baseketball” as the halftime band also gained them more fans and helped the band’s popularity to grow.
